Paul, I didn't get any sketches but I did see Neal Adams working on a Wolverine commission at his booth...and I picked up some original art scans from Rich Friend of some of his WildCATs pages over Travis Charest.  Next year I plan to be in Artist's Alley myself.

Watching Neal draw had to be a treat. I am trying to convince a friend of mine to be a guest next year. Fingers crossed, I will go if he does.

Anaheim is a great place for the show.  You have Downtown Disney right there, numerous restaurants nearby, great environment...if you come out give us a head's up so we can arrange an LA JBF gathering at the show.

If I go I would love to get together with the JBF's West Coast crew. ;)

Paul:  "Wonder Con is on my short list of cons I would like to attend. Mega and Heroes being the other two. Sounds like a great time, Tim. Only one thing is missing from your report, a listing of con sketches you picked up! ;)

****

Ha!  I have only been to three comic conventions in the last 20 years, and this was the first one in which I even watched an artist drawing.  The two conventions I went to as a kid were about hunting comic books.  And I got back to my roots with this one!  I have been frustrated over the years that I couldn't get a cheap copy of JB/JRJr's "Armour Wars II", and was able to get the full story, but it took going to every comic stand on the floor!  Fun!

I was shocked to see Neal Adams in a booth - I didn't know he was going to be there.  I was too star struck to approach him, but I blended into a crowd to gawk at him drawing.

It would be great if you came out for a con, Paul!  Count me in for that one.  I really liked that Anaheim is such a convenient drive from Los Angeles. This past weekend, I stayed at a friend's house in Laguna Beach and we drove up each day.  So I commuted to Anaheim like I always do, but this time from the south!

Glenn:  "WonderCon was fun this past weekend.  A true COMIC BOOK show, with a heavy emphasis on comics, trades, golden/silver age collections, orginal art, toys and assorted merchandise.  Saw several children, which is always a good thing in relation to comics.  Also saw several female fans of various ages, who were actually INTO comics.  There are definitely untapped markets out there that the major publishers are ignoring to the industry's detriment IMO.  The artform appears to be thriving, even if the companies appear unable or uniterested in appealing to its fans in a general sense.  But I digress...I enjoyed my day at WonderCon  and am already making plans to enjoy more of the show next year.  Here's hoping that it continues to be held here in Anaheim and becomes what San Diego Comic Con USED to be - a show for fans of comic book, fantasy and other related media."

****

I wish I knew you were there, Glenn!  I should have figured you would take this one in as it was so close to home.

I doubt that Wondercon will move to Anaheim - I think San Francisco should have its own convention.  But it was a kick to have an established show here - they hit the ground running and made the most of a really fantastic convention hall.  I'm glad I was able to benefit from the vacation they are taking down here.  I heard last year they shared the hall with other shows and it was a problem.  I'm glad this year that they had the whole thing, even though it's such a big center that they didn't need every hall.  Was this a test run to move San Diego to Anaheim?  Or maybe they can just start a new show in Anaheim?  I think it would be smarter to do one in winter, when people want to get to the warmth of Southern California.

I definitely appreciated the emphasis on comic books.  Mark Evanier did a fantastic panel on comic book artists from the 1970s - Len Wein, J.M. DeMatteis, Brent Anderson, and Marv Wolfman talked for an hour, but it seemed to blip by in minutes.  Evanier did as great an interviewing job as he did at my last con in 2008 - he is a skilled host.

I wish I saw more panels, even though I saw quite a few.  I couldn't attend Sunday and missed some that I wanted to see, like Marc G on ARROW.  I poked my head into the Arena during the Superman screening, and it looked like a good space.

And the food trucks on the walkway were delicious!  Since when did food trucks become hip?  They were a joke when I was a kid.

----

Food trucks have been hip since 2009 (2008 if you were an LA super-hipster)! I was bummed because I didn't realize they were out there until after I grabbed something from one of the convention concession spots.

It may have been idle gossip, but I overheard some vendors talking about how well the show is doing in Anaheim and how they might keep it in Anaheim while still doing a show in San Francisco.

Unless San Diego drops the ball with its convention center expansion, I don't see SDCC moving away from San Diego.

@ Timmah! : I got my tix for the show early but was on the fence about going until that week.  Glad that I decided to get away for a few hours; I enjoyed it!  Spent a few bucks, bought some hardcovers and a softcover collection of JB's "XM:THY".  Saw a few friends and took in the vibe, which was great.  Doug was there also with his kids on Sunday; next year we'll all coordinate better and try to get together in the evening after the con at one of the local spots there.

I also found some Hidden Years at one of the booths!  I already had volume one, but was able to score Volume 2 of "X-Men Hidden Years".

I wanted to get some friends copies of the trades for "Dark Phoenix Saga" and "Days of Future Past" - I saw a bunch of copies on Friday, but they were all gone by Saturday.  I couldn't believe the prices on JB's UNCANNY X-MEN original issues.  I wanted to get an original JB X-Men comic for a gift, and the prices were out of sight.

That sounds like a smart move.  Los Angeles needs a premiere convention, and I really like Anaheim.  A winter con here would be the best move - San Francisco should still have a spring show.  The proximity to Disneyland will open a convention up to families.  More families means more kids - which is what we need.

I like that the convention center borders Disneyland.  I have been glad to see on this forum that other people appreciate the artistry of Disney's theme parks.  Anaheim is the birthplace of the theme park - the original park started spin offs worldwide.  When I first visited, it seemed small compared to DisneyWorld.  But now I think it's awesome, especially since California Adventure has opened it up and improved the experience significantly
