Brad, the wife is not coming. Our vacations together are not to include boxing or comic books. I made that mistake first in 92 when I took her to the old Chicago Comic Con. She hasn't let me forget since. Thankfully she doesn't mind me taking these trips on my own or with friends (yes I call Aikins a friend. Pains me to admit that.) I arrive on the Thursday before the con. Text me and we can make plans about meeting up.
Marc Foxx, I am up for anything called Beer Week. We can make plans to have a drink the closer we get to the festivities.

Paul and I just talked about budgeting for cons last night. We also laughed about how many times we have broken the budget! We are bad influences on each other.

Dave makes some excellent points as well. Both to do and to try not to do. Budgeting, talking to the guests, planning, research, hot dogs are all ways to maximize your convention.

Well there's anticipated/no big deal budget breaking and then there's 'this is probably a bad idea as my mother may not get a Christmas present' budget breaking. I've done both more often than I should.

Ha! It is definitely the latter that I am discussing. Thankfully, I've only done that once or twce. Mom understood.

I always go to the Heroes Convention in Charlotte, and usually go to Dragoncon in Atlanta. I've hit the Baltimore Con the last couple of years too, but may skip that one and go to the New York Comic-Con in its stead, but Baltimore does have a couple of guests that I've missed out on over the years, so who knows which way I'll fly at the end of the summer.

Given the choice, I'd bow out of NYCC. Unless you are deadest of having the experience of it, it is neither as fan friendly or as pro friendly as Baltimore. A madhouse.

I am going to be in Calgary this year for the Comic Expo. Last year it was great with a solid line up of artists and packed with people. Fans were coming in from all over the western Canada and the US.

To echo Fred, NYCC has become huge and sometimes overwhelming. I've been attending NYCC since the first year(where I was turned away like everyone else, due to poor planning). New York really needs a second big con, when Wizard purchased Big Apple, I thought ok two major shows a year in NYC. And the first show they put on was a good one, but for whatever reason they shot themselves in the foot when they tried going head to head when NYCC moved into it's October timeframe. And since they canceled they have never planned a show again. So those of us in the New York area, lost a good show that used to be the Big Apple National. Hopefully some day a new non-anime/tv/movie convention will come again to NYC.

I would agree. I went to the 2011 show (just of Saturday) and it was very difficult to move from one area to the next, so I skipped the 2012 show.
The Connecticut Comiconn (http://www.comiconn.com/) moved from Stamford in 2011 to Trumbull in 2012 and it was very convenient for me, so that was my only 2012 show. Unofficial word is that it will be back in Trumbull again in 2013; however, it's not posted on their web site.

There's also the Monster Mania Conventions that are held twice a year at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, New Jersey - I've never been, but one year (probably 2004? I know it was before our son was born), Julie and I ran into Tony Todd from Candy Man at a local steak house - seemed like a nice guy, but we didnt bother him. It was funny, because our waiter saw all the people noticing him and said "Who is that guy?" and we told him who he was and why he was in town.
