I do really like retrofuture ideas. Good luck with this!

Before this turns into an internet meme, a quick correction. The original concept, SPACE RACE, was "retrofuture". THE HIGH WAYS is not.    This is straight sci-fi, in which I am allowing myself the use of a few staples that have come to be questioned by real science in recent years.

This is not meant to be "retro" or "old school" or any of the other formerly complimentary terms that have lately turned pejorative.

JB, was having High Ways a part of the new Next Men universe there from the beginning or was it a last minute idea that formed while you were coming up with the story?

Thanks for all the info on your new project also. The spoiler-free peek looks amazing, the detail alone just takes my breath away, and Leonard O'Grady's coloring fits perfect with this new project.

JB, I like the design of the cockpit in the above color sneak peek...  A bit of "SPACE 1999's Eagle meets PLANETES" type of vibe to it.

I also like the custom colors on one character's space suit (something I remember from a failed TV pilot movie called PLYMOUTH where individual spacesuits had been personalized for easy identifcation, with one suit decorated up as Godzilla).

Adds book to "buy" list.

Well, I have no idea what PLANETES is, but I suppose a bit of the Eagles sneaking in was unavoidable, if unconscious!

The resemblance is, mind you, largely superficial:

I asked Leonard if it was possible for Marilyn's -- for that his her name -- suit to be constantly changing color. And, instead of taking the easy route of simply having it go blue-red-green-yellow and so on, he decided on a "lava lamp" effect. Pretty cool, huh?

I am 100% on board for this.  It looks and sounds great!  Here's hoping for a very long run on this.

PLANETES is a both a "Hard SF" manga and anime series dealing the near-future job of orbital debris clean-up.  The space craft designs have a NASA-functional look to them, and are pretty much in the same "space truck" groove that you've shown here.  I'm going to be bold enough to suggest the anime series for possible viewing after you completed HIGH WAYS.

I was also going to mention that the ship interiors looks like something I originally expected the STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE TV series to have shown us, but they chose to go down a more familiar path instead with the NX-01.

Indeed!  He must had fun being able to do things like that!

Early days of space exploration tied to the Next Men universe?  STOKED!  Reminds me of all those years ago with Space: 1999 (and what gorgeous covers those were).
