So if you had any say in letting Dr. Doom be loaned out to the Micronauts title, thank you. If not, thank you for your Fantastic Four work which got me to read super-hero comics regularly.

••

Unfortunately, Doom's appearance in MICRONAUTS is an example of how easily things can get miscommunicated.

Bill Mantlo, when he was writing MICRONAUTS, was constantly on the lookout for "small stuff" from the Marvel Universe that he could fold into his stories. So, of course, when he saw "Liddleville" in the FF 20th Anniversary issue, he was almost instantly on the phone to me, asking if he could use Doom and the tabletop town.

"Oh, that would be cool," I said. "The Micronauts would seem to be GIANTS in Liddleville."

"Well, no," said Bill. "I'd want them to think they were normal sized in a normal sized town." Seemed he'd missed the very important element of SCALE in my story -- the fact that Doom's little robots were only a fraction (a very small fraction) of the height of a 3" Micronaut.

"I'd rather you didn't do it, then," I said. And I thought that was the end of it. But a few months later I walked into my LCS, and there was the latest issue of MICRONAUTS, containing the story as Bill had wanted to do it.

I called Bill the moment I got home. "I asked you not to do that story," I said.

"No," Bill said, "you said you'd RATHER I didn't do it. I didn't take that as a firm NO."

Ah, well!!

Wow! You never fail to astound me.

And that eye on Psyklop! You made it look like he's gazing in a certain direction.  Most artists just shade the lower parts and leave it at that.

And...how fitting is it that these arrived in the mail the day you posted that commission? Awesome.  My childhood revisited...

Another brilliant commission. Wasn't the biggest Micronauts fan, but I would buy that in a heartbeat.

This is something I never really ever even imagined i'd see......... two great
things that go great together. What a fantastic idea Stuart, I LOVE IT! Man,
what if John HAD followed Michael back in the day, and if Terry had tagged
along.... OMG that could have been AMAZING!

Like a lot of others have said themselves, the first 12 issues of The
Micronauts were a game changer for me, i'd never seen artwork quite like it
before, and coming in close on the heels of Star Wars, the cosmic space
fantasy was hitting all the right notes for me at 9 years old! More Micronauts
commissions please! That Acroyear is tight! What a fun idea!

It sure is...

The Micronauts seem to be enjoying a lot of attention of late.  This is no less than the third time they've come up in different forum discussions on different websites within the past week or two.

Elsewhere, someone posed a question that drew some debate; the pronunciation of "Acroyear."

Some say ACK-ro-year and some say eh-CROY-er.

Anyone wanna weigh in?

That is one cool commission! Well done, JB!

Got to admit I didn't see this coming at all from the title.

Ronald, I'm fairly certain the former pronunciation is the correct one.

JB, While the Micronauts toy scale was 3 3/4" (and they would have worked better being that size in the book), Bill kept stating in the Micronauts that they were 6" tall...I still don't understand why he made them that tall (although both Golden and Broderick usually made them look about 4" tall).

EDIT: To finish my thought.

I remember the commercials for the toys and they pronounced it "ah-
KROY-er".

As Eric states, it's the latter. I just read it in one of the letters pages. ( Doesn't sound as cool to me that way, for some reason, tho.)

Well, at least I've been saying it correctly all these years.    :)

Thanks, folks!

I've been in a 70's Marvel mood the last 6 months or so. I picked up the 25 issues of the Micronauts, 10 issues of John Carter, and I've been looking around for my brother's Conan comics in my parent's garage. I hijacked his Star Wars comics years ago. That was a good time even though I wasn't old enough to read alot of those comics. I really enjoyed this commission.
