so, during my working hours I get to design books. Our deadlines are
such that I can't afford to both design and draw, so I get to hire the
illustrators for the books and do a lot of art direction; but every now and
then . . .

We have a bi-weekly New Idea meeting, and about a month ago we were
trying to come up with a bunch of wacky devices that would be done as a
monthly project thru one of our main clients, Scholastic Book Clubs: the
kids would join this Wacky Invention club and every month get some
weird device, and they would have no idea what it was before they open
the package.
One of the ideas we had was "a set of teeth that would clamp onto a book
or binder to keep it secure, using a tooth brush as a key to unlock the
teeth." So during the meeting I drew this:

FORTunately, we couldn't get the numbers to work out: even tho
Scholastic flipped for the idea, they weren't able to promise enough
orders to be able to afford hiring us for this.
And I say "fortunately" becasue the product developers and I couldn't
figure out how to get this to actually clamp and stay clamped on a binder.
A book: no problem. But our boss said it had to work for a binder
because "kids don't use books anymore."

AJL - got 'em and mailed you back

Andrew - nope you're not the last one.  my turn to grow roses...
(Oh and you should all see the pencils for AJL's piece!!!!)

And I love your idea Andrew.  At my job I get to do something sort of creative once and a while, too!

That's really cool Andrew....how about some kind of "latch" at the spring-hinge. Two-fold with that. One it locks the jaws shut. Two provides the "bite". Just make sure there is a little "wriggle-room" for when the folder fills up.

It's null-and-void now obviously but there you go.

Thanks Chris, used the Touch Markers and a Tombow brush pen for the colours on the original art.

Yeah, it's Cammy.

Darren - yeah, we were thinking something along those lines if Scholastic
bought the idea, tho it would be a headache to manufacture cheaply
enough;

and Darren - excellent drawing!

Great job on that Cammy Darren.  I thought maybe a little red for the barrette would work nice, but now I don't know.  I really love how you just splash a little color in your illos!
