I was away all day yesterday and two pages have filled. Thanks for all the nice comments on my spider-man sketch. Some impressive new posts have been popping up lately. Well done, all.

Since I just saw this over at newsarama:

I guess it's okay to show the painting I submitted a
week or so ago to DC in hopes of possibly getting
some cover work. Here ya go:

so waitaminute...

did they rip you off or were you given that layout to do your piece?

jinkies...

your piece is nice though...your style lends itself to the "wateryness" of the
environment of aquaman.

i've always felt that things were too "crisp"...the colors and everything should
be more subdued in the aquaman world.

Ooo, very purty Bill!

Put the ink lines back over the top of that and I'll bet it looks better than the one they are using;-)

Bill, have you painted any JB image? From where I am standing you give
Gary Cody a serious run for his money.

I haven't quite recovered from your Abigail piece.

I'm sorry. I should've explained a bit more.
After I saw Butch Guice's piece a few weeks ago I
asked his permission to do an acrylic version of it.

He agreed and sent me some hi-res inks which I
then printed out at 20% grayscale on 16" x 22"
illustration board. I did it over the course of a
weekend and then sent it on to Joey Cavalieri.

I figured they probably already had a colorist lined
up, but I just wanted to give it a shot anyway since I
love the creative team (Busiek/Guice) on this book.

Darren:   The photograph of my painting above is bit
too blue and a bit out of focus. The original is
sharper and the greens and aquas are prettier.
I figured this was good enough since I was doing the
whole thing on spec. If I'd had kinko's scan it, it
might've turned out better, but it would have set me
back about 20 bucks and taken a few days longer to
turn around.

Flavio: I was about to paint a JB piece, but then got
sidetracked by this project. The problem with JB is -
there's too much to choose from! Everytime I think
I've made up my mind, I change it. I'm still looking for
suggestions.

"I...think I hate you, man..."-Flavio

LOL, no worries, I hate me too...particularly when I look at my artwork and see nothing but things I would have done differently;-)

edit "look" not "llok"

"I'm still looking for
suggestions."-Bill

The Superman "pin-up" at the end of the True-Brit comic. Where Superman is flying in front of the Satue of Liberty.

"but it would have set me
back about 20 bucks and taken a few days longer to
turn around. "-Bill

That's perfectly understandable. I will relay something that happened to Dick Giordano at a convention I attended -way- back. There was a large que of folk at the DC stand looking to show Dick and Jerry [Ordway] their work. The regular "fodder" came and went and this guy place a very expensive portfolio case on the desk, the gentleman was very presentable. He un-zipped the case and the artwork was contained in seperate plastic sheathes. On one side there was the script and breakdowns and the other the finished pencils. There were twenty odd pages there. Dick was very impressed by the presentation but could not figure out if it was a "joke" as the artwork inside was, lackluster! I don't say that to be cruel, take me literally when I say that a sheep was a "cloud" with four stick-figure lines for legs and a couple of dots for eyes. The title of the story was "Sheep in Space". Dick said something about it not being exactly what DC were looking for at that time, which I thought was about as polite as you could get;-)
Then a second guy turned up right at the back of the first. He was clothed scruffily and was very nervous so sort of mumbled and gave little or no eye contact. He brought unsorted artwork out of a plastic bag, the pages were dog-eared but by contrast the artwork was very good. Dick asked Jerry to have a look and see if he wanted to add any comments. They picked up the fact that he was going for some very static camera angles but felt that with a little work the gentleman showed great promise. As the que carried on it's serpintine way Dick turned to Jerry and siad that if the second guys artwork was presented by the first guy, he probably would have picked him up there and then;-)

Got one of those mechanical pencil thingies from my boss, I figured I should stop being afraid and try it.  Here is my version of Donna Troy:

"you might try varying your lineweight a bit (this is something i'm working on in my own inking so it's in my mind - so please don't take that as a cut!!!)"

Thanks man, critiques are always welcome with me! I'll post the other part of the drawing as well as other odds n' sods, soon.
