I had a thought Chris, and I know it may be a bit wacky.  You say you don't like doing backgrounds.  Well why not take out the character of a picture you're going to draw, and just draw the cityscape?  I know it's kinda the same thing, but maybe you can trick yourself into thinking it's not.

Hmm lol. It's more that I don't have any creative ideas for backgrounds, plus it's so time consuming, but I do need to give this a go sometime, so thanks for the idea man!

What books do you read about drawing backgrounds?

I have several.  How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. Joe Kubert's Superheroes, Perspective for Comic Book Artists by David Chelsea, and anything by Christopher Hart.  I also suggest any of the How to Draw (insert DC name) animated style books.  Just use the applications with your own line style, and you'll have some great outcome.

I also suggest finding the DVD version of How to Draw the Marvel way or the VHS (if you really have to) and watch it.  For me, seeing a person draw is better than a book.
