Here is today's sketchbook entry from class.  It's more representative of what I'm doing day-to-day with school.  The comic book pieces I try and sneak in now and then are frowned upon.  Sad, really, that the University promotes gallery-type art almost exclusively.  Lots of kids in these classes are in for a career change or abject poverty...

James Stewart gives his best, and he hopes to be back on soon enough.

Jonathan Watkins - "Sad, really, that the University promotes gallery-type art almost exclusively." - I went to SVA, which, if I'm remembering correctly, was founded for commercial/cartoon art.  When I went there, comic book art was looked down on as well, despite the fact that some heavys (Klaus Janson) were on staff and teaching there.

And really, learning those principles and techniques (gallery type) will help you infinitely with comic/commercial art.  As we were discussing in a separate thread here, learning to draw everyday things are very important as well as learning basic principles of layout and composition.

Oh yeah, I like your sketch.  you have some great use of color defining shape.  post more!

Jonathan,

well, it is just like for me. I was lucky enough to study in the Fine Arts School of Angouleme, which was the only one in France to have a specialized section in Comics books ( the French way, even tho some of my classmates were for the American style ).

And sadly also, few years after my graduation, and to be closer to the artistic and graphic job market, they mixed it with a graphic design section and the section is not as important as it was before.

So I started drawing and African American Robin, and here's the end result.

I plan on doing some more sketches, and maybe I can get Matthew to Ink or Color one.

Some notes. He doesn't have a cape. Just "wings" like in Batman Beyond.  His whole back side is black with shades of Green.

Justin - I really like that design of costume!  It is totally cool and it's original, but keeps the feel of the original color/look of Robin.  Any reason you chose to do an African American version?

As soon as I can clear out some of my backlog (trying to finish the jam piece right now) I'l LOVE to work with you again on that Robin or anything!

These 4 are form the 3.5in x 5in sketchbook from class. Which I prefer to the standard sized book since it forces me to make decisions on what to leave out/include.

1. Classmate.  2. Guy messing with his bike during a motorcycle certification test 3. Asian guy eating at Denny's.  4. Me lookin' in my rearview mirror between classes.

I like the costume design on that Robin, btw.  If you're doing more versions post them.
