What a wonderful use of color and contrast. I'm envious.

Hi all,
Does anyone have any advice on how they became so great at drawing such awesome comic characters!? I love to sketch and most of my work here has been either portraits or a more realistic approach to the characters but I'd love to know if any of you can offer me some tips or pointers? Thanks a lot.

Chris - practice, practice, practice!  Life drawing, life drawing, live drawing.

Redundant enough?  Ha.  That's what just about any pro will tell you.  Using photos to learn is good to a point, but won't get you a really good feel for a 3 dimensional object.  You have to be able to draw real things and make them believable.  Perspective is key as well.

Here's a good interview with Neal Adams that I think is valid and good:

There's a question and answer with Neal Adams on JBF somewhere, but I can't find it that echo's this interview.

So, superheros are kinda idealized forms, but using basic shapes to lay out the body can help.  How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way is real good too.

Get a sketchbook and just do some gesture drawings of people in the park, that is fun, gets you use to motion, and gets you outside for a time.

Lastly, a class might help you.  Maybe a community college, if you have a similar thing in England?  That's it.  Draw, draw, draw.

Darren welcome back. I like the way you did the background. Also your penciling on the figure is really nice . I see that you didn't go as thick with your line work on the guy i think i like this a bit more then you normally do. As well as the cross hatching you'v done on this piece good show.
