Q for Professor Vlad:
I've followed a tutorial you wrote (somewhere) about converting a
scanned image to a clean blackline by using channels. Here's my
problem. I'm getting a lot of "dirt" or a grey haze with this
method as show in the blow up of The Grifter's face here:

Part of the problem is in the original - it scanned in that way due to
the way I printed my blueline to work off of. What's the best way
to get rid of that without having to erase it all by hand?

Try transfering to a new layer matt.
step one . make a new layer over your grifter inks, make sure the layer has a white fill.
step 2. go back on your ink layer and use the magic wand to pick up all your inks.
step 3, go to the new layer and fill in with paint bucket ,if the inks are crisp you should have a clean set of new inks.

Matthew,
The art needs to be cleaned first. I usually adjust it using levels in
Greyscale mode. I have a coloring manual of my process that I did a while
back, that covers a lot of these things. It's a bit dated I think, but if you
want I will send you a copy. It's a .pdf and it's about a 1.5 MB.

Vlad, if it's not that much of a trouble, I would be interested in receiving that tutorial, as well.
BTW, hi to all, I was on vacation until recently and than with the job and adjustment time I kinda lost this thread. The nice work by talented people in this forum continues to impress me. Carry on....

Vlad - yes please! You should be able to click on my e-mail at

e-mail.
Thanos - good to see you again. Hope your vacation went well. Any sketching while you were on holiday?

Matthew , you can adjust the levels on your drawing so the inks get darker and the dirt won't be as dark.
Then open the channels pallet,
create a new layer make the background of that layer white
Make certain after you do that that your foreground color is black
in one of the rgb layers hold control and click on the little image of your drawing
now you selected your drawing, now inverse the selection
now go to the white layer you created and with it selected press alt + Backspace
