Marc, scanning blue lines should be fine. You'll pick up the lines as grey, if you aren't scanning in "colour" though.

I hope when it's finished it will be better.  I'm using tracing paper to ink this one, and at the same time, I'm trying to do some digital inking in Adobe ILL.   So that should be...fun.

Wow.  I've been neglecting this area due to actually having entirely too much work to do at work plus my home commitments are stacking up.  I'm "re-engineering" my drawing table to accommodate my bad posture and trying to figure out how to build a light box into it!

Anyway, I'm very impressed with what everyone has done.  Sorry for the blanket "good job" to everyone, but it's from the heart!

Keep up the good work.

Darren,

I think you misunderstood the thrust of my question.  I was hoping the scanner WOULDN'T pick up the blue lines, so unfortunately your: "scanning blue lines should be fine" comment... isn't.  Bummer.  I should have been clearer, mentioning that I was hoping to do some blue line work and ink over it.  Then scan without having to erase the blue.  Oh well... no biggie.

Thanks!

Matthew,

This is hardly directed at you, since I am guilty of the "blanket good job everyone" comments myself.  And like you, I am conscious of when I do it and it most definitely feels like I'm being lazy or complimenting "on the cheap".  Still you bring up the point and I feel like saying more about it.

I think we should all stop with the blanket "great work everyone", type compliments.  They really are a cheap and easy way out of making a few thoughtful comments/critiques about everyone's art.  I've personally had people say wonderful things about my work, say a few nice words, or say nothing at all.  Frankly, I've watched this thread very closely, and of all the people who post drawings, I have found (even counted) that my work garners the fewest-to-NO responses.  That's fine.  I interpret that as the drawing must have sucked and that means most people are following the old adage to say nothing if they have nothing nice to say.  Personally, I don't post so that people can just coo over me.  I would love critics to tell me where I'm going wrong, etc.!!  Maybe a lot of you don't care, but I would rather have had people tell me where I went wrong with, for example, my Kon-El pic, then to have every single member of the board, save one, completely ignore it out-of-hand.  Maybe you think that feels good when that happens to you, or maybe it hasn't and you just all chose to ignore one of my contributions assuming it wouldn't sting.

And that leads into my point, I think people (at least I do) work hard on their drawings, always seeking to improve.  If you can't single out the artwork you are commenting on for praise or criticism or both... then why bother posting.  "Great work everyone" frankly tells me jack-s**t on a stick about my work or anyone else's.  I find when someone does post something with some thought in it, I find myself going back to the whomever that person is complimenting and/or critiquing and re-examining the art with their comments in mind.  And let's be honest, how many times have we (myself included) posted something like Matt did, and were SO cognizant of what a hollow gesture it was, that we APOLOGIZED for it in the same sentence!

This is probably my last post, as I said, it is fairly clear a cult of personality is forming and a few people seem to get all the "oooohs and aaaahs" while a few of us get short-shrift or worse.  I've enjoyed it, and I will miss all of u guys!!!

Luv,

I, too, have been wanting to make some serious critiques of art in this thread but have been reluctant to rain on the supportive parade you guys got going here! But face it - some of the art posted here needs work - a lot of work - and doesn't really need the false positives.

I'm not saying we should lay into each other here, but some honest opinions should be welcome, right?

Marc, I am desperately trying to find your artwork in this thread but am lost in a sea of art. Could you or someone else direct me to it?

Maybe when you post your art you should just let people know that you are looking for some feedback on it when you post it?

When I posted my artwork here I knew that I wouldn't get many raves.. haha.. not only is most of it just rough sketches.. but even the more polished stuff is bound to pale in comparison to not only the uber talented JB fans here.. but then you have probably the most discriminating art fans in maybe the entire world. Let's face it, comic book fans are a much tougher audience than fine art/modern art folks... and then we John Byrne fans are probably even more discriminating than most comic fans as well.

Some of my sketches are just that...sketches that I've done for fun, nothing serious and nothing that will travel any further than my folder, so I guess I'm not too fussed about what needs improving as I'm well aware of the flaws on my work, but as it isn't going anywhere I don't mind. However, if anyone wanted to give me a few tips here and there or tell me how to do something better then I'm open to suggestions and help, but I won't be altering my work just because I'm lazy and like moving on to new pictures, but that's just me. I guess there's a lot of professionals here and constructive crit may be very valuable.

I would love to have the more skilled/experienced artists here give general art tips and that kind of thing.

I actually posted the sketches from my sketchbook just to make some shy kid out there feel better about their own drawing skills, and as a cathartic thing because I am very shy about showing my art as well.
