There you have it. What I'd suggest, for what that is worth, is quickly penciling some mindless shapes, ovals, triagles, swirls whatever all next to each other, overlapping, as messy as you like. Then just ink with the quill. Do hatching, zoom lines, emphatic lines whatever just render the shit out of these mindless shapes and really push the quill to your extent.

Then leave it for a moment and come back with fresh eyes.

Look for the lines or technique you feel actually is best suited to the quill. Ask yourself what texture it reminds you of. Say it was wispy like clounds! Well, then you know, the next time you are doing clouds, break out the quill.

You need to find what impliment best suits what effect. Consider it a repertoire.
