Looking up at that panel above, I can say that it does look a bit unusual for the outer shell to be cracking as though it were made of glass, but then I have no idea how aluminum reacts to pressure when compared to bronze or steel.  That Shooter called for "realism" after the panel was drawn is just one small example of that micromanagement impulse of his.

The skin of most airplanes is very, very thin. It is not made to take pressure in the same way as, say, the hull of a battleship. It's meant to be sleek and light, so it can move thru the air with the greatest ease.

As you'll note, I WAS careful to draw Sasquatch lifting the plane on a seam, assuming the actual structural support frame lay immediately beyond the skin at that position. Not good enough for Shooter, tho.

"Realistically", tho, if anything the aluminum would TEAR. Recall the footage of that tank on a rampage in San Diego some years back. At one point the thing side-swipes a Winnebago, and the camper just SHREDS, like paper.

Yes, I can see that. I love this little sequence.

There was an airline "bit" in the "SUPERMAN RETURNS" movie where Superman catches a falling plane and the skin ripples like water as it comes to a stop. Neat, I thought, to a point-- but it was still unconvincing.

I find this stunt much more convincing. Staging these super-stunts well takes a certain combination of knowledge and whimsy.

This is awesome. All it needs is the FF and I would be in heaven.

Agreed.

It doesn't need to be realistic, it just has to be BELIEVABLE.

(I think John Byrne said that once or twice)

VERISIMILITUDE!!

Alas, that began to fade in comics in the mid Seventies, when a kind of RPG mentality seeped in. QUANTIFICATION.   REALISM! Got sucked into it for a while myself. Escaped only by Herculean effort!

Awesome. But I notice Storm's right leg isn't finished (the black).
