Just curious Tom, what's the squeezed lemon add to the water? Is it just a taste thing or does it have some health benefits?

I do the water thing Tom mentions. I´ve been really watching what I eat and doing some intermittent fasting.

I began working out (strength training) one year ago and I´ve shed 20 kg (around 44 pounds?). First, it was twice a week, then four, now I am going for five days. In the weekends, I ride the bicycle with the kids, just to keep active.

I try to keep the portions small! It´s the calory deficit that will make one lose weight, after all. For lunch, I go to self-service restaurants where you weight your dish on a scale. I´ve been shooting for a 250 grams lunch for a while, now.

I eat lots of fruits and vegetables, fish and eggs. Once or twice a week I eat a steak. Still, there´s a lot of room for being flexible: I go for burgers with the kids every now and then; drink beer and wine regularly; I never drink a whole can of soda, but I indulge a few sips, just so I don´t feel there are any "forbidden" foods.

"All things in moderation, including moderation"!

Lots of good info in this blog.

No supplements, so far. If I ever get to a stage of fitness where the goal is to "bulk up" I might go for the protein shake thing.

Couple of things: it helps to balance your alkalinity and gets your liver going in the morning.

I wouldn't dismiss protein shakes as a "bulking" thing.  Certainly, one doesn't need to boost animal proteins, but I would respectfully suggest you supp some vegetable proteins -- pea protein is best absorbed by the body.  Hemp protein is very good, too, but a little gritty.

When you wake, before you have anything else -- coffee or anything -- drink a litre of water with a 1/2 lemon squeezed in.  It will bump you up like you wouldn't believe.

From my experience this is 100% accurate!

Hmm, I will have to try the lemon water trick! I'm usually in a rush in the morning, but unlike coffee, I could easily get that ready the night before and run out the door with it.

Does it help with feeling more alert in the morning, too?

I definitely suffer from intermittently-bad knees. With no real rhyme or reason why it comes and goes (I think that now being about 30+ pounds overweight may have something to do with it though. I bought Glucosamine but haven't been keeping up with it as I probably should.

Just curious, Marc, how long did it take before you started noticing any benefits?

Re: glucosamine/chondroitin - if I'm remembering correctly,
the combo helps prevent *further* degeneration of joint
cartilage, not bring about relief as such. I could be
completely mis-remembering that little tidbit, so experts
please feel free to correct me.

Is this still good to do pre-workout? One of these days we gotta talk about working out, as I am interested on how you have reached your fitness goals, and what your routine is.

It ain't gonna hurt, as they say -- but you'd be better served having a cup of coffee before your workout to boost your metabolism and jump-start the fat-burning process.  Avoid those pre-workout drinks -- they're bogus.

You should drink plenty of water throughout your workout, tho.

REMEMBER: If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated!!!!

Great thread! I went through a nutrition class over the winter that has completely changed my eating habits, including the use of supplements.

I have switched to a diet that excludes any processed foods, sugar or processed oils—only expeller pressed or other naturally derived oils. I have also switched almost exclusively to organic meats, and organic vegetables within my budget.

For supplements, I take Bifido bacteria every day, along with L-Glutamine. This really helps with digestive/gut health, which many of us don't think about, but requires ongoing "maintainence". I also take Omega 3, Omega 6, Vitamin D3, COQ10, as well as a supplement with a mix of magnesium, ht3p and other things.
