Looks cool. Nice chunky, industrial feel.

I love the space thingy, and love the density of stars. In Arizona at night it almost seems as if there are more stars than darkness. I can imagine that in a vacuum the starfield is so much denser.

the ship above gives me a Space:1999 vibe with the framework atop and the modules along the side-- really, really nice design work,•• The Eagle, which I drew many times when working on SPACE: 1999, is one of my favorite spaceship designs, even if it did spring from one of my least favorite shows.

…love the density of stars.•• That's something I'm particularly going for in this series. In the TREK books, I did TREK style space, which was fairly sparsely populated with stars, and which, of course, featured large stars that moved behind the ship. Moving stars are not an option here, of course, but I also want to avoid large stars. I can't create the full illusion of the night sky, where all the stars are the same "size" (ie, points of light with no actual dimension) with their different brightnesses creating the sense of difference size. But I can certainly go for the density of the starscape, especially in space. One thing I will be avoiding, tho, as I did in the TREK books, is those Hubble style false color images. Sadly, space doesn't really look like that.

"Very nice! That's a big ship (tanker/dreadnaught/whatever)!" George Lucas made an interesting comment to the effect that he told all the designers on the Star Wars movies that the purpose of a new space ship and its hero/villain status should be obvious for the audience within 3 seconds of seeing it. This ship "says" slow freighter or tanker to me, because of the modular pods in the middle, the exposed storage tanks, and all the surface piping. Of course, JB's philosophy could be very different from Lucas'. This may be an ultra fast fighter carrying tanks of lethal bio weapons to destroy entire worlds. What do you intuitively feel the ship is when you look at it? Then try to think what aspects of the drawing made you feel that way.

Whatever it is, it looks like someone actually BUILT it and the parts have actual purposes.

===== Absolutely. I don't necessarily see a freighter but a ship that has a lot of functional parts. Let's say this is a transport for a small group of people. You have to consider that they need food storage, waste management, propulsion, sleeping and living quarters as well as work stations. I can imagine all of that being handled with this design.

If the remake series does get off the ground, I hope they keep that iconic spacecraft. Thanks, JB! I'm eager to read this new series!
