JB, if your Asian character is from Hong Kong, I will be more than happy to help for some photo references about the city, or some Cantonese language stuff.

Thanks, Didier. But all three of the Trio are American born. (For one of them, that will actually play out as a character point.)

++++

From the previews, I got the impression that TRIO wasn´t set in the world outside our window, but in some near-future or alien world...

Are these guys in the same universe of any of your previous series, JB?

Can we hope for a TORCH OF LIBERTY or DANGER UNLIMITED team-up?

The TRIO exist in their own "universe", and I am not going to pretend it's ours! The first few issues will open with a caption reading "Another time, another place…"

This is while we wait to see if the orders on the COLD WAR tpb justify another arc.

*****************

So, they're basing it on whether the TPB sells or not? It seems insane to me that it's not based on whether or not the actual COMICS sell.

( And dammit, the trade better sell.)

This is the world we have made for ourselves -- and the main reason I have spent many years now lamenting the fact that so many people say they will "wait for the trade". All too often, especially at a "small" company like IDW, it's impossible to tell if a series has been "successful" until the trade paperback numbers come in. It's a lot like judging a movie's ultimate success by factoring in the DVD sales.

COLD WAR was a critical success, but we look to the "evergreens" to know if it was a financial one. (You can tell how much stock IDW puts in the trades and other reprint packages just by looking at how many NEXT MEN variants they have produced!)

In fact, as some of you may already know, I have even waived my first publication royalties at IDW, to make it cheaper for them to produce the books. THAT'S how much we now depend upon the trades!

How do the logistics of setting the release date work at IDW? Do you get a project approved and start plugging away and then they set the release date based on whatever internal criteria they have set up?

Working with any kind of realistic lead time means any company is gambling on four or five issues being done before the first one comes out. (This was somewhat frustrating when I first started working in comics, and had been doing so for half a year before my first issues saw the light of day. "What do you do?" "I'm a comicbook artist." "Oh? Where can I see your stuff?" "Well, none of it has come out yet. . . ")

As a further indicator of how crazy the whole thing has become, the last few issues of the most recent NEXT MEN series went steadily UP in sales, so that the last two actually SOLD OUT.

So a large number of retailers have responded to the new series (AFTERMATH) by. . .   CUTTING THEIR ORDERS!!

One thing that makes me "worry" in this regard is IDW´s choice of making TPB out of ONLY 4 issues...
