Ahhh, Alpha Flight. The fans loved you, your creator does not and the storytellers who followed the creator really f****ed you up!

I think the appeal of Mac, the character, is that he was trying to be a hero despite not setting out with the intent to be one.  He was a scientist, and was forced to become a superhero to prevent his designs from ending up into the military's hands.

JB: the Snowbird to dinosaur thing, which happened in the first issue of the current series, really bothered me both due to the major mass increase she took on (isn't she supposed to only be able to take on or lose small amounts of mass- like to an arctic owl, bear, swarm of insects?) and that a dinosaur isn't as obviously a creature of the north like previous shifts have been.

Guardian is clearly the winner as far as favorite costume, but it was Puck (at least until his origin was "revealed") who seemed to be the most popular.

I hated the origin that Puck was given. Heck, I hate that his origin was even revealed.

Lars: From a writing/behind the scenes point of view perhaps, but I imagine that's only because he has no emotional quirks or baggage.
Beyond that though, I DISAGREE.

Mac is a good guy. And that's how I like my SuperHeroes!

Maybe his personality was a little vanilla and didn't have the requisite angst we've come to expect from comic characters, but that works in his favour. (As a real person he would've been nice to have as an acquaintance or friend)

Besides, I think he's interesting BECAUSE he's hero being heroic for no other reason than it's the right thing to do. No tragic origin just old-fashioned "Let's fight evil and help the innocent!"

In my opinion, you described a one-note character, Lars.

Don't get me wrong, I like Mac! I agree, he's a really good guy. He just lacks the depth the rest of Alpha Flight has.

I really need to re-read this run!

As noted, I see it as a precursor to JBNM. There's a lot of read-between-the-lines and connect-the-dots stuff--like Snowbird's father later conjuring up Tundra, Sasquatch and Aurora sorta becoming f*** buddies off-panel, etc.

I really like the idea of each story being taken from each character's own imaginary series, too. Puck's reference to an encounter with the Brass Bishop being a nice example. Too bad that editorial footnote which tried to "explain" the reference was added in.

Alpha Flight is one of my all-time favourites. The death of Mac really stuck in my mind for a long time after originally reading it. Sasquatch's story was also a big shocker for me, although it was hinted at all along.

My favorite has always been Sasquatch.  I loved the visual design(still do, even after learning on this forum that he's modeled after one of those little troll dolls)and that he retained his intelligence/personality.  Most memorable to me was the flashback scene of his irradiating himself, and then another where he was helping out some sort of construction outfit by clearing the landscape with his own two hands and a tree trunk.

Close second was Shaman.  As a seventh grader I put him in the first short story I ever wrote.  It was only a few years later when my mom brought the story out of storage that I re-read it and felt a twinge of embarrassment over such blatant plagiarism.

***********

I recall Puck being my favorite character at the time.  Issue #5 was reread over and over because of that and is probably my most tattered Alpha Flight issue.

That said, I've considered Guardian's costume to be one of my favorite designs ever, up there with the costumes for Spider-man and Green Lantern.

I don't really understand the idea that Mac was "one-note" or all that boring. Sure, as the "straight-man leader" he seemed to be the least complex, but was he really all the different from Reed Richards or even Tony Stark (pre-boozer)?

Yeah...and ironically, the events that set in motion his final fate in #12 made him even more interesting to me. He went from the reluctant scientist hero to being almost giddy with excitement at the prospect of being a "New York Superhero!" (even wondering if he would run into Spider-Man, etc.).

Reading the issue as a kid, I was sure until the very last page that Guardian would be ok and the final reveal would be that Snowbird had died. Such a great ending.

To be clear...

I don't believe "one-note" = boring.

In rereading the AF trades, it just struck me that Mac never really has much personal conflict to deal with. Conflict = entertainment. He doesn't have a day job. He gets along with his wife. He doesn't even seem TOO worried about being unemployed. His big arc is going from "I'm reluctant to be a superhero (but I am a superhero)" to "I'm excited about being a superhero".

Seems like when he's not "fighting crime", he flies around as Guardian all day.

I don't think a one-note character is a bad thing at all... but if one person in the group HAD to die, I get why JB picked Mac.
