I remember Ron Moppet from my studies in the Art Department at the University of Calgary where he ended up. John Hall, another one of my profs from those days (late 1980's) remembers you from his ACA days.

••

My best pal and fellow alum, Gary Cody, was in communication with John Hall a while back. He's still producing pretty amazing stuff, apparently.

(Hall was one of our First Year instructors at ACA.)

John is a great painter, a great teacher and was a big influence. He was my final year painting instructor at U of C. Both his wife and daughter are also gifted painters. His son Jarvis is a good friend and runs a framing store and art gallery in Calgary. One of the few places in Canada that does hand-carved frames.
The Art Gallery of Calgary recently had a exposition showcasing the work of the entire family:  http://artgallerycalgary.blogspot.com/2011/05/traditions-ill uminated-celebrating.html

Great story, thanks JB.

Some of you may notice this story is slightly different from the one I usually tell. When asked about the ACA days I normally distill it down to THE DEATH'S HEAD KNIGHT being an "end of year" project, and leave it at that. It was kinda fun to be able to expand and tell the whole thing for a change.

JB, did you do a Channel 10 local programming show about comics while still in Calgary? A friend of mine says he saw you filming this at the old comics store downtown just off the Stephen Ave Mall, circa 1978.

I did a show, but it was at the studio. And it was a lot earlier than 1978. More like 73.

Circa 1980 I appeared on a local talk show, also shot in the studio.

While reading these posts I can't help but think of that old saying:

'great oaks from little acorns grow'

Fun to hear of how it all came together!!!

I must be mixing up stories. As my pal tells it he saw you at the store and bought two sketches from you. A head of Wolverine for $5 and a Captain America and Vindicator vs Doctor Doom and the Red Skull for $20. He still has them nicely framed in his son's room (cue scene from Unbreakable).
At some point will have to get photos to post.
