Bill - it was called Star Heroes.

Brings back memories as those old black and white digests were my main introduction to Ditko's Spider-Man and Kirby's FF (they had their own digests as did Hulk). I remember that one of the Spidey digests included a JB Team-Up story also. I enjoyed the mix of stories from different periods in those!

Are they about the size of the old Marvel pocket books?

Slightly bigger Michael. The dimensions are not quite the same either as there is a greater width to height ratio. If you have seen any TOKYOPOP Manga books these digests are similar in size to those.

Yes David,Star Heroes! They were roughly the size of those `Commando Library` war story books. They were good value for pocket money! I remember i got told off in my English class for reading one during the `read a book` class! The fact that they had pictures as well as words was apparently a no-no! ;-)

What was wierd about Star Heroes (micronauts and Battlestar Galactica) was that at issue 11 it became a reprint of the original X-Men.

Maybe that's because there is no Direct Market and comics are sold in newsstands, bookstores and other regular venues...

Nope in the UK, comics are generally sold in comics stores, the same as in the US. There are some reprint comics sold in newspaper shops but not sure what sold of sales they have.

The only comics sold in newsagents over here are home grown `funny` comics like The Dandy and The Beano and licensed magazine type titles like Doctor Who,Ben 10 etc plus the Panini reprint ones that feature two or three stories per title. You won`t find the monthly distributed Marvel titles like in years gone by.

That FF paperback upthread was my intro to the team.  It was small, but I carried it around with me and held it so close to my eyes it seemed bigger than it was!

Who did that cover art?  I never found out and my copy is long gone.

Tim, that cover is by Gil Kane, inked by Joe Sinnott according to GCD. It's originally from Fantastic Four 143.

Thanks, Robbie - I always loved that image and didn't know the origin.  I'm running to my FF DVD-ROM when I get home!

Did Gil Kane draw the Invisible Girl for the cover of the pocket book? The original one had Medusa on the cover.

Big fan of the pocket books.
