The impact of digital comics and the availability of cheap reprints like the Essentials make back issue prices moot for me. I have a pretty substantial physical collection, but for me it's all about the stories. Now that I have various cheaper outlets to get the stories I want to read, I haven't made a back issue purchase in several years.
On the original art front, I own a couple pages by JB that I got for what I'd consider very reasonable prices. They don't feature popular characters, iconic shots, or anything that would be considered "hot". I bought them because of JB's technique. As an artist myself, that was the factor that influenced my purchase because I wanted to see how he did it. I buy comics for the characters, and art for the artist, I guess.

Whew, I saw that piece in San Diego in the early 90's for $500 at an art dealer. At my last San Diego in 98 I picked up 5 silvestri X-men panel pages for $100. Sold the last one in 08 for $500. Bought a Fender srat.
The Adam Hughes stuff is only going to skyrocket with him now pre-selling one commission per con day on ebay.
I almost never buy published pages anymore. I used to really enjoy them but the lack of word balloons and being 2-100 times more expensive I'd rather just get a commission. I am very happy that there can be an appreciation of comic art as being real art and worth more money.
The art I cherish the most has personal story, usually it is getting to watch the artist create something from blank paper.

$500? Whew is right!
Lack of word balloons really hit me hard. I miss them a lot Joe.

There are still good deals to be found in the original art market. Hit Artists Alley and you'll probably find plenty of your favorite artists from the 70s through the 90s selling nice pages at $50-100. You can still get some decent (non-costume, non-pin-up) pages from artists for $20 or $30, and there are a lot of reasonable commission rates to be found at cons, too.
Yes, the days of buying a stack of Frank Miller or Jim Lee pages at bargain basement prices are gone, but here's a whole page of John Byrne art selling for less than $100.

I believe the first round of post-announcement-of-new-policy Adam Hughes eBay auctions for Heroes Con are winding down. A few hours left and they are going for...gulp!....$2500-3500 each!

Adam Hughes is (hopefully) not going to die anytime soon. It will be interesting to see if those prices remain that high after consistent auctions over a, let's say, 5 year period. Remember, there are a batch of deep pocketed collectors who have tried and tried for years to get a Hughes sketch. The question is how many deep pocketed collectors are there that will consistently bid again and again against each other.
but good for Adam! Hooray for mortgage payments!!! Couldn't be happier for him.

Auctions are over, final prices: $3,050.00 $3,151.00 $3,555.55
Wow. Six months ago he would've gotten, what, about $1200 or so for the same pieces?

Adam and Allie started doing these eBay auctions for "guaranteed sketches" a year or two ago and I think $2500-$3200 has actually been the norm.
It always impressed me that he was still willing to knock himself out and do the $400 and $200 ones as well.

Yes, the days of buying a stack of Frank Miller or Jim Lee pages at bargain basement prices are gone, but here's a whole page of John Byrne art selling for less than $100.•• The original art market has always been driven by changing fan tastes, rather than any real awareness of the actual value of the art. I picked up my first Jack Kirby page (a JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY Thor page) for about $150 back around 1976. This was during the period when fandom had largely turned its back on Kirby (those awful "Jack the Hack" days), and his stuff was practically being given away. Fast forward fifteen years or so, to find Kirby getting the respect which is his due -- and his pages are selling for $5000. Not a penny of which went to Kirby himself, of course!

I remember the old art auctions at the Chicago Comicon (long before Wizard) when they were held downtown at the Americana Congress and then later on at the Ramada O'Hare. Tons and tons of great art that was donated by the artists for a good cause that went dirt cheap. For example, the most expensive Curt Swan Superman piece went for $15. They usually topped out at about $12. I wonder how much some of those pages are worth now...?
