An old friend sent me this pic today...

..bleh.

I'm pretty sure it's a "joke", but I hate that Iron Man was forever changed after that Demon in a Bottle story...

...I just wish they would have created a new character to deal with a drinking problem. The alcoholic thing feels very forced in this case -- and now it forever defines Tony...

...and by the way, WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD BUY THIS STATUE???

I've always clung to the fact that at least he was drinking Canadian whiskey.-

Well, there is no accounting for taste, but if did buy that statue I'd put it next to:

a Batman strung out on Venom statue

a Time Trapper turns out to have been Cosmic Boy all along statue

a Hank Pym slapping Janet Van Dyne statue

a Hal Jordan choking a Guardian statue,

a Superboy Prime carving the superman symbol into his own chest statue,

a Wonder Dog eating Marvin and putting Wendy in a coma statue,

a Wonder Girl joins a Kryptonian cult statue

an Infinity man killing all the New Gods while battling a Scott free possessed by the anti-life equation statue

a Reed Richards using a power drill to drill into the skull of the Thor clone that "malfunctioned" and killed Giant Man 2 statue

a Captain Atom making various elseworlds or multiverse batmen fight to the death (including vampire and nazi Batman) in an arena so they could join his conquest of the multiverse statue

a Green Arrow attacking and being killed by Black Canary on their wedding night statue,

and a Maxwell Lord shooting Blue Beetle in the head statue.

It would be the "shit I wish I could forget about super hero comics" collection.

David M seems very much like a one trick pony. He played the addiction card with Nathan Lubensky in ASM as well.

Wish he'd work out his personal demons someplace other than superhero comics.

I ask that "who buys this?" question alot. I had no clue David Michelinie wrote that, I assumed it was Jim Shooter, idk why.

Canada #1!!!

Was there ever any background that would justify the Iron Man as alcoholic storyline? Or was it really just "I want to do this story and since I'm writing this book, I might as well use the lead!"

I'm gonna post my story about my bff in the 4th grade again who was really entuhisastic over this story. He really liked the idea that Tony was banging a bag lady...

In defense of David, if memory served it was Layton who suggested the alcoholism.

When I read Emery's post, I chuckled at the "Wonder Dog eating Marvin and putting Wendy in a coma" - then I realized that all the other ones he mentioned were stories that had seen print. So . . . Wonder Dog ate Marvin and put Wendy in a coma? Ugh.

The first 1980's trade of "Demon In A Bottle" was my first exposure to Iron Man in comics. I think this facet of Stark made him more interesting in the same way that Frank Miller's tweaks made Daredevil more interesting.

Given that Stark was always a playboy seen at parties drinking and the like, it's not a great leap to imagine how stress could push the character a bit too far to the point that he would abuse what he only partook in socially up until that point.

I think the reason behind it was to add a layer to Stark's somewhat unremarkable (not bad, mind you) personality and to generate interest in a character that up until that point had only been second tier.

Darrell, yep. It was in Teen Titans # 62

Goggle: "teen titans # 62" + "Wonder Dog" for the details.
