Just received word that my father died this morning. He was 90 years old, and had been in the ICU since Friday afternoon, when he was found collapsed in the bathroom of his suite at the Home. He'd had several fairly massive heart attacks in recent years -- including three in a row two Christmases ago -- and this time was the last time. Not sure how I will handle this. The family tradition is not to travel for funerals. My mother went back to England for neither of her parents, for example. And the crazy weather we are having here on the East Coast seems to preclude the idea. Plus Dad told me many times there was no reason for me to go back. Everything, as he put it, was well in hand. Since we had a good chat only an hour or so before he was stricken (I told him a somewhat rude joke that he enjoyed enormously), I think "farewells" have been duly said. Now he can find out, as he has been pondering since her death three years ago, whether Mom has indeed "gotten the house ready" for him.
