The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, considered the first English language detective novel. I read about the book in another novel, Drood by Dan Simmons, which piqued my interest. *** Thom, did you manage to finish DROOD? A while ago I mentioned it here and somebody (I'm not sure if it was you) mentioned the book getting stuck at some point. Turns out it happened to me too. I got maybe two-thirds of the way through and put it down. I'm still not sure if I'll ever get back to it.

I read a great treatment of Edwin Drood in a book called "The D Case". The premise was that Japan, having bought the rights to the world's greatest unfinished works, brings in the greatest experts to complete them. For "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" they bring in fiction's greatest detectives (Sherlock Holmes, Maigret, Poirot, Lew Archer, etc) to discuss the work. The book alternates between a tongue in cheek style deconstructing and discussing the work, both story and contextual history; the life and death of Dickens and his friendship/rivalry with Wilkie Collins and thus the discussion also covers quite a bit of "The Moonstone", all in caricaturized style of the various detectives. The alternate chapters presented the actual Dickens story. It's a big book, but an enjoyable way to read an analysis of a novel, especially an unfinished and thus unsolved mystery story.
It also got me curious enough to hunt up Collins' work and read it once I was done.
Right now, I'm reading Dean Koontz "Watchers". Very enjoyable. Just finished Jasper Kent's "Thirteen Years Later", the followup to his excellent novel "Twelve".

Thom, did you manage to finish DROOD? A while ago I mentioned it here and somebody (I'm not sure if it was you) mentioned the book getting stuck at some point. Turns out it happened to me too. I got maybe two-thirds of the way through and put it down. I'm still not sure if I'll ever get back to it.

Nope, same thing happened to me. Got maybe 80% through it, put it down, and just never picked it up again. Same thing happened with the previous Dan Simmons' novel I read, TERROR. I think he needs a better editor.
