How many homosexuals had been released with a Dishonorable Discharge, as opposed to Other Than Honorable or General Under Honorable? Usually a Dishonorable is due to court martial activity, and/or you usually have to commit some heinous crime.
Dishonorable carries with it (amongst a few other issues) forfeiture of Veterans benefits... based on my observations locally, the vast majority of the discharges were either General or OTH.

Once the "leadership" in the USAF Reserve caught wind of her being a homosexual, they proceeded to process her out after 19 years of service - 1 year shy of being eligible for retirement.

Unless it's drastically changed since I got out, you can retire anywhere from 15 to 19 years and still receive retirement benefits. They just are reduced by a percent based on how many years under 20 your are.
That doesn't mean that she received benefits, but being put out at 19 years does not automatically make you ineligible for retirement.

The other services will have similar resistance to integration.

Military members will do as they are told to do or they will be put out. When I was in we had several people we knew were gay and we didn't give a shit. You are giving the military far too little credit here.
Will it be a smooth transition? No. But nothing worthwhile ever is. I predict it won't be nearly as bad as some are making it out to be.

William - if you're talking at the person-to-person or the team/shop level, I agree and share your opinion.

Here's where I disagree. As a recovering officer running AF shops from the team level to the Wing Level, I have seen far to many cases of command influence gone wrong. I have had mid-to-senior level officers as well as fellow company and field grade officers express "concern" about a person who they suspected was gay/lesbian. I refer you to my Major Witt example above for a peek at some senior-level attitudes.

Agree whole-heartedly.

I hope you're right. I think you're wrong.

I have no doubt that is true, but once they are told it doesn't matter anymore will they still express "concern". Or are you talking about concern for the well-being of the homosexual?
I can see some people attempting to cause harm to another soldier that comes out and is openly gay, but I still believe it will be in the minority and will be swiftly and severely dealt with.
I may be wrong, but I believe our armed forces are better than that.

This could lead to interesting things...
Gay in military gets married...in a state that respects gay marriage.
The military should respect that and provide whatever spousal resources are provided any other spouse...this would amount to an ipso facto recognition of Gay marriage by the federal government...at what point do non-military spouses sue for equal treatment under the law...
it's taking an absurd amount of baby steps to get there...but equality will eventually be the law of the land
