My quick review of Space Ghost #2 thru #4:
I apparently missed the major reason for his "death" by missing issue 1, but I can take a guess as to who is behind it(I will find that first issue, my regular store said the first two are really hard to find, thank you to Hastings for having a copy of #2). I liked the art, what else has Ariel Olivetti done, it looks familiar. The story up to issue four was easy to follow, and I can overlook the "change" in Zorak's appearance. I plan to finish the series out and I would actually buy it if it became a monthly. I know this is a real short review, but I liked the book and wanted to post with it fresh in my mind.

I think DC announced at WonderCon that there would be more Space Ghost after this mini.

On a positive note, I was talking to a customer that came into my restaurant and we started talking comics because he was wearing a FF t-shirt. I asked him what comics he was reading. He said that he was reading Doom Patrol by JB! He said he saw the first issue at his LCS and was blown away by the art. He bought it and thought it was great how the team was revamped. He said it was his favorite book next to the Flash.
I keep promoting the book to everyone I know. It was good that someone I didn't know was already reading the title.

Review for Cable & Deadpool #12
This book takes me back to the X-Men stories Marvel did in the mid-90's. I'm not nostalgic of that vintage of Marvel in the same way I am for the late 70's or early 80's, but I could see how C&D would really appeal to those who grew up on that stuff. C&D is a dense weave of sub-plots and super-spy characters. It would be difficult for the uninitiated to appreciate the significance of why Cable's arm is an unravelled mass of cables, or why Deadpool and Agent X act exactly alike, but for the long-time fans it would be really interesting. The art is pretty good; it's more of that Neal Adams meets Manga style stuff, but done well.
I won't continue with this title, but I do recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the Harras-era X-Men.

Review for JLA Classified #4
I picked this up this weekend.... It rubbed me the wrong way at first and decided to "dare" the book to make me laugh out loud. I wanted to be able to post that it didn't make me laugh once.
You see... Blue Beetle is one of my favorite characters. Blue Beetle... the guy that was crucial to the plot of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Hand picked by the Monitor, guys! (I never did figure out why he was so z ``important, though....) Blue Beetle... the guy who is probably most well known just for being "deconstructed" into his Watchmen loser counter part Owlman. Yeah baby! And now his role in the DC universe is relegated to being the butt of JLA jokes. Yippee.
Yessir, plenty here to be 'offended' at, never mind the off color jokes. But yeah, I was laughing out loud by the end of it. Rating it on what it was attempting to do, I think it was fairly successful. Some of the running jokes were stupid... some didn't quite work... but on the whole things worked and the final punch line was well done. (Don't ruin it by flipping to the last page!)
I'd be glad to pick up the next issue as part of a DP swap, but if that doesn't happen, I think I may spend the $3 on Blue Beetle back issues instead! Bwa-ha-ha!

Jeff, I agree that Blue Beetle derserves much better treatment by DC (and that new 'reverse' costume really sucks, eh?).
But... "Richard Hertz" didn't make you snicker? Guffaw? Laugh out loud and wake up your wife (like I did... my wife tho, not yours).

I posted this review over on the Newsarama Fallen Angel thread. I agreed to try out Doom Patrol if Rod checked out Fallen Angel.
Here's the post I made over there.
********************************************************** ****************
Well good news. I scrapped up a bit of change and headed for my LCS.
First the good news.
I was able to buy issue #9
Now the bad news
They were sold out of issues #7 & #8.
Perhaps these comic swaps are working? the LCS I frequent is really
good about stocking up on even some of the most obscure indy and small
press stuff. Anything by the big 4 gets many copies ordered. The fact
that the store ran out - well I can only conclude there must be a lot
of Doom Patrol readers in my area.
More good news though. By the time I finished reading #9 I liked the story. And now I want to see what happens next.
So here's my mini-review.
The first half of the story was confusing. Very confusing. I had no
idea who these characters were or why they were battling the monster.
The dialogue in the early part didn't help either. Somehow it seemed a
bit disjointed. Almost like these people were reading lines from a
play, not natural speech.
That all changed though starting when the black-haired woman started
telling her story about her and the gorilla. When the author stopped
focusing so much on the battle and instead gave more scenes with the
characters is when I warmed up to it.
You see, I like stories that tend to place a lot of emphasis on
characters. The battle is important obviously - there's got to be
something for the Doom Patrol to go up against of course otherwise
there's no story to tell. But this scene at the beginning just reminded
me of why I tend to not like many of the superhero comics and manga
I've tried over the years. The first half of the story was "POW" "BAM"
"CRACK" stuff. In fact, it reminded me of a lot
of the manga I dislike so much. Shounen that focus on
fighting for the sake of fighting. The first half of #9 Doom Patrol is
shounen-like. I suspect a lot of shounen manga readers would love this
part of Doom Patrol.
However, the second half of the comic I liked a lot. I still don't know
who all these people are although I gather the guy in the wheelchair is
the Doom Patrol leader and the blonde woman is married to the guy who
went on a rampage. I don't know who the green dude was at the start of
the comic although I take it he must be some guy that's part of the
Justice League - although I can't say for sure as I've never read a JL
comic in my whole life.
So while I didn't care for the first half of the comic I liked the
second half very much. And now I want to know what happens next so I
think I'm going to stick around at the very least for a few more
issues. If it continues to give good stories about the characters like
it did with the second half then Doom Patrol just picked up another
long term reader.
I've always believed it's better to judge a comic over several issues to get a better feel for story, plot, characters, etc.

Rob Hearn,
It's a funny one as it goes, but I wouldn't have been obvious about it. They actually managed to put a laugh track into the comic book for this one-- and I would have found it funnier if I caught on to it the third or forth time someone uncomfortably declined to refer to him as "Dick."
I can play along with that, though. It was when the teenage girl made a joke about sleeping with Billy Batson that I thought things went waaaay out of bounds.
edited to clarify who I'm talkin' to...

Hi Dana
I can't give my review of Fallen Angel #18 and 19 until later tonight. I am quite impressed with what I've read though. Thanks for picking up Doom Patrol. I think the sell-outs of Doom Patrol are reflecting that retailers are cutting their orders of the book to the bone, ordering just enough for current readers and leaving nothing on the shelves.

Joe,
That's what's happened at two different shops in my neck of the woods.
If that's prevalent, then there will be very few new sales to casual readers. You'll have to be "in the know" to seek the series out. But you'd think that shop owners would buy more of any series that sells out within a day or two of the shipments....
?!?!
Maybe this will turn around when there are 3 JB books from DC at once....

I wouldn't be suprised if there are those out there who think DP has already been cancelled, having not seen it at their LCS in months. I think it's really up to DC to get retailers to stock up on this book, if it is (hopefully) important to that company. Chris H.'s shop sold around ten more copies when he promoted it, even without a discount.
