#7 is a good issue, the start of a new story that conludes in #8.
Which issue of She-Hulk do you recommend?
Hey DP fans who have not participated here yet, give this one a shot. I hear nothing but good things about the new She-Hulk. |

If you enjoy quirky stories that approach superheroics with a lighter
tone, any issue from 1 to 9 is a good starting point (most stories are
self-contained), if u rather read more traditionally action-packed
tales, you can't go wrong with 10-11...a huge confrontation with
Titania that is very serious and leads to a serious battle that will
rock the MU...

I'll pick up this swap. Also, I owe Jacob S. 's Mary Jane TPB a read. And I promised to read Y the Last Man on another forum. There goes my comic budget for the week !
P.S. just to clarify, I didn't take the Tom's She-Hulk offer. Not this current one, maybe a future one by another SH fan.

Joe,
Y the last man is truly outstanding. ONe of the best, if not the
best series out there, in my opinion. Start at the beginning, and
you will love it.

My personal favorite issue of She-Hulk was #4, guest-starring Spider-Man. Any one that's ever been a fan of Spidey or J. Jonah Jameson will love this story. Guaranteed. And it's only one issue.

I'm still up for a swap, but I'd like it to be with someone who will post a detailed review of what they liked and/or disliked about the issue of DP they read. I want to read more than "It wasn't my cup of tea..." (It doesn't have to be a dissertation, but give me enough to show that you really read an issue.)

Yeah, I think everyone getting involved in these swaps should be doing this.

Tim - you da man !
Wallace - that's a good idea. Perhaps instead of us making it a general requirement on all swaps , specifically ask your swap partner to write something more than a one-liner reaction to the book.

Paging Dave Rodriguez - please report to the Swap Shop....
So I want to thank Dave for the "Samurai: Heaven & Earth"
swap. The art is truly wonderful. I guess this is painted? The
facial expressions are so good I am wondering if there were
some human models used for the project. I don't mind if there
were - any way they get it done is fine by me. They really
capture the time and place
I was only supposed to pickup #1, but I bought both #1 and #2
to get a feel for where this is going as a series. I really like our
main character, who is the only surviving Samurai of a fallen
leader.
I missed "Iron Fist" and "Master of Kung Fu" as a kid. Never
really had an interest in any of the martial arts or their
characters. It was Frank Miller's "Daredevil" that introdcued me
to those topics. This style is different - the painting is ornate
and detailed yet it captures movement and action very well.
The two issues I read have stillness punctuated by bursts of
samurai action. It's also got some hot chicks - always a plus. A
great late teen/adult comic that I can recommend. I will be
picking up the next few issues to see where this is going.
After only two issues, I really like the pace of the story so far. It
is deliberate without being to slow. The art and storytelling
seem tonally matched for a great ride.
I would say my only beef is that the violence in this book may
be more graphic than younger readers are used to. This is a
personal thing of mine dicussed here in the forum. I am OK
with violence, but these are realistic renderings of
decapitations. The angels used cover up the gorey stuff - but
just barely. I would rather this had a "For Mature Readers" on it.
Otherwise, thnk you Dave R. for the great read and I hope you
enjoy Doom Patrol as much as I did your title!

That's a great Review Tim and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I purchased the
3 issues as promised. 1-3 to be specific. And I read them in one
sitting. And here comes my review..:)
The Good
Byrne's Art
Man it's like he can't take a wrong turn. I've been a fan of John's art
since Dark Phoenix. I love just looking at it. It's nostalgic because
I've been exposed to it for so long and its a part of the way I see
comics, but's it's also very contemporary. (If that makes any sense) It
doesnt look like a "retro" book.
The Opening/Set Up
Issue 1 opens and it's all BLAM! Giant yelling monkey face and stuff
getting blown up. That's how you open a book. Make me want to turn that
page and see what happens next.
The Characters
How do you not like to see the Doom Patrol in action. And Byrne has them nailed as far as personality and characterization.
The Action
This kinda goes back to the art, but the action is just silky smooth and dynamic. I love to look at those panels.
Nudges Power Development
Nice hints at things to come.
Doom Patrol Goes Out
I like how they get set up to go investigate these weird events. Challengers of the Unknown, Planetary, Johnny Quest...;)
And now that other part.
The Not So Good
Exposition
There seemed to be just a ton of "here's what this means" throughout
all three books. I know it's there so people don't get confused, but
it's jarring when people talk about their powers and motives to great
length. The opening of issue 1 is an example.
Nudge: "That was incredible Faith! You deflected that huge thing with just the power of your mind!"
The other is the Wormholes explantion of "why I'm villain" This part
was very old school and brought me right out of the book. There are
quite a few spots like this, and truthfully is my only real gripe.
JLA tie-in
I Felt like by missing whatever JLA lead in there was I was missing a
big part of the actual story. Oh, and Batman saying he trusts Niles
Caulder. Batman doesn't trust anybody. He doesn't even trust the rest
of the Justice League..:)
So what this leaves me with is me still curious about issue 4. I am
hoping that the kinks get worked out enough with exposition so it fades
out a bit and I can get to the actual characters. Despite those issues,
I still want to see what happens next.
Thanks for letting me play guys! It was a blast and a great idea. Good Luck!
