My Manhunter #6 review...
I really liked this. The lead character is VERY layered and multi-dimensional. In fact, I can't recall such a complex character in superhero comics. I was very impressed by this. Kate Spencer is interesting and deep.
The pacing on the issue is quick but appropriate and the story gives us lots to chew on. Enough information is provided to give a first-time reader a handle on the character and the storyline. It does take a while for the costume to appear and, interestingly, this is when I thought the book was at its weakest. Not poor, but weak compared to everything else. I'm less interested in Manhunter than Kate Spencer at this point.
The art is dependable and suits the tone of the comic (which seems to be realistic gritty but still hopeful and postive -- I'm still not sure what drives Kate to put on the costume, but I'm thinking redemption must be a factor). The writing here is well above par. Definitely value for money. I'll buy this arc and see how it goes. May look for back issues. 8/10

Doom Patrol 7
Ok , I chose this ( along with Aquaman and Manhunter) as a Swap book , for She hulk I think. The art was great, the story was very cool. I like that Robotman looks like Iron Man, that might just be me though. Nudge, and the other two newbies (Im assuming) seemed to have promise. I have never really gotten any DPs, so this is new to me.Martian Manhunter showing up at the end was great, for fans anyway, DP not so much. Have the first 6 issues made it to TPB?
Anyway I liked it enough to pick it up next month, and am going to check out the first arc(s).

Hi Ron! Yep, I will pick up Invincible. I looked for the latest issue at my LCS, but couldn't find it (sold out). I pledge to pick up the next issue that comes out. If I buy the first TPB, does that make us even? I know support of a regular issue is probably better...

I would encourage you to start with the first trade of Invincible. The series will read much better if you start from the begining. I bought the trade at the Chicago Wizard Con last year and to my suprise was instantly hooked.

I decided the truest (?) way to do this swap was to pick up the most recent issue. I haven't ruled out picking up the first TPB, but here is my review of issue #19:
I'd never read this title before, but had heard some good things. Well, I was pretty underwhelmed.
The first couple pages alone had me a bit confused. Has some guy named Rus been replaced by a shape-changing alien or is this the guy's powers? Strange for the first two pages of a book. The alien is not seen again this ish nor is Rus referred to. Huh? Would have been good for the last two pages of the previous ish perhaps. Next, some guy in his underwear hitting on a cute chick on his couch. She's irritated. Huh? Next, the hero of the book (I think) wakes up his Mom who is in bed drunk and her room is a shambles. They have a conversation about something or other. Huh? What happened to that room? Why isn't the son concerned? Eventually, we get to some superhero stuff. Generic fisticuffs ensue.
I don't know. There is some stuff here that seems interesting, but all in all, this reminds me of an Image book from the early 90's. Not a Liefeld, but maybe a Savage Dragon kind of thing. Maybe that's because of the weird collection of villains with goofy names or the group of heroes that suddenly arrive to save the day without anyone telling the reader who the heck they are. This wasn't bad, but came across kind of simple and weak. 4/10

I would agree that this would be a tough jumping on point and to try and answer your questions might spoil the plot twists in the story so far- if you decide to pick up the trade. I had never really been a fan of any Image comics before I read this one so I wouldnt compare it to early Image fare. In simplistic terms I think of it as kind of a cross between Superman and early Spiderman (ie- Superman like powers alien in origin and Spiderman teenage problems/clever dialogue). I also bought the trade on a whim with no expectations, so that probably heightened my enjoyment of the series.

Manhunter swap!
I went yesterday to my comic shop, but the new comics were not there yet, so instead I bought Manhunter #1, #5, and JSA #69. Manhunter #6is on my pull list, so I will receive it next week instead.
So far, I read Manhunter #1, and I liked what I read. I'll have to pick up the other issues (#2, #3 and #4) to see if I will add that title to my list.
I'll post a review of #6 next week then.

I was really into INVINCIBLE for its first year or so, but found myself losing interest when the storyline came about that shifted its focus so drastically (regular readers know the development I'm talking about). The SAVAGE DRAGON reference rings true, I think, in that SAVAGE DRAGON was all about taking classical superhero conventions and occasionally doing the unexpected with 'em (even if it meant the book would change-up big time as a result). The fact that Kirkman's associated himself with any number of Erik Larson projects in the past also lends credence to the fact that he may be using SAVAGE DRAGON as a sort of model.
That said...I've had fun with SAVAGE DRAGON occasion. Not for years and years now, but I've had fun with it.
More importantly, I loved those first two INVINCIBLE trades and would still recommend 'em even though I'm losing interest in the book after recent developments. It's only in the long run that I think Kirkman's weaknesses have become a bit more exposed and I've realized I don't have a lot invested in the characters.

On the GJ board Marc Andreyko had this to say about DP:
"well, gang- i read Doom Patrol #1-7 and was pleasantly surprised. i am a huge devotee of grant morrison's run on the book, so my expectations were pretty low BUT, in terms of its own merits, DP is actually a fun, old school comic book romp. sure, some of the dialogue is a little stiff and expository, but it sorta adds to the mood of this book: straight forward superheroics.
so, will i read the book with #8? well, i can't say DP has made it to the top of my reading list, but, if it's a light week, i'll probably get it. "

HI!!!
I think this swap thing is a great idea.
I always loved the DOOM PATROL and I remember how thrilled I was when
George Perez sort of "re-introduced" them in his Teen Titans
relaunch...but anyway, I very much like John Byrne's art but financial
difficulties kept me from buying th DP book and life takes precedence.
However, I discovered MANHUNTER and I honstly tell ya that it is a book that totally rocks!
THE ONLY comic that makes me anticipate the next month's installment.
I am such a fan that I even created a Yahoo Group and totally try spreading the word whenever and wherever I can.
It's about Kate Spencer, Federal Attorney and mother who also happens to be a costumed crimefighter named Manhunter.
I won't spoil anything else,(u will be deliciously surprised
discovering all of what makes the book great) but let me tell ya:
If u like bone-crunching action perfectly balanced with fantastic
characterization, this is the book.
Plus, the protagonist is not a perfect woman or a "hero" in the traditional sense of the word.
She has flaws but she tries to do what she thinks is the right thing.
So, why don't you guys give it a try and I will buy DP?
What issues do u guys suggest?
How is this SWAP thing gonna work?
Do we buy a copy and review it here?
(I admit I didn't read this whole thread before posting this, so maybe I missed the rules)
So, will it be MANHUNTER for DOOM PATROL?
Thanks!!!

Hi Kate, glad you found us. Please take a look at the very first post in this thread for the rules. Feel free to modify those rules, so long as your swap partner agrees. Basically, you and your partner buys a copy of each other's book and review it here. I personally suggest the latest issue #7, the start of a new story. #8, the conclusion of that story, comes out on the 26th.
BTW, Kate, the board rules require you to make an account with your real name. Unless of course it is coincidentially the Mahunters name too !

Believe it or not , my name is Katherine and I happen to be Mrs.
Jonathan Spencer, (as opposed to the book's protagonist, whose maiden
name is Katherine Spencer)
How do I choose my "partner" in the "swap"? (oh, boy...that sounded dirty...thank God my hubby knows what this is about! ;-)

LOL. I've been thinking of using a word other than "swap" , but somehow "comic exchange" isn't as catchy.
Your partner chooses you. We've already had eight folks here try Mahunter, most of us being very impressed with the book, so you should have no problem there.

So, if I wanted to go ahead and buy the DP issue, even if nobody had chosen me still, could I?
Or should I wait?
Thanks again!
