Or the Bible is a lie.

Putting too fine a point on it. Many of the folks who wrote the Bible believed their own nonsense. Many others were tailoring their own specific agendas (the four Gospels can't even agree on who Jesus was or what he taught). Closer to say the Bible contains some history, much myth, and even more propoganda.

Right now, it is impossible...

Ah, the all-powerful Judeo Christian God, always getting backed into a corner, his grand plans constantly thwarted by his upstart creations.

As stated, that could be interpreted any which way till Sunday.

I believe this pertains to what will happen after the final coming of Christ, not during the time when it was first spoken...I hold this belief mainly because people have still been dying for the last 2 thousand years.

Not by any rational person --- but I was pretty much expecting this response from you, and you have now officially worn out your welcome 'round here. Run off now, and tell everybody how I persecute people for their religious beliefs.

B'bye!

You're not worried about upsetting folk with your opinions? <vbg>

We make our own meanings.  Some of the "meanings" or "stories" we've told ourselves, have over time become so sucessful that they've inspired both great heroism, and also great evil. We call such successful "stories" religions, and it's a lot easier to accept one as given, than face up to originating a set of meanings of our own, day by day, case by case, on the evidence.

Unfortunately a lot of the "background colour" of the "stories" has passed out of current appropriateness, like the face of the president in an old Spiderman comic.  This leads to false battles between science and religion, when in fact scientists should be saying "you like that the world is made in 6 days in your story? Fine it's just a story but the evidence is this, and a lot of people tell your story with that bit tweaked like this, so as to fit better...,your choice."

Religious people should stop being upset when other people don't like the same stories as them, particularly when much of the 'liking' is down to which stories they were told as children.

The first time was after they were scattered by the Assyrian and Babylonian armies.  The 2nd time was after WWII.

The Romans don't count as the 2nd? I mean they only destroyed the Temple and stole all the treasures.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20727780.301-mtheory-d oubts-linger-over-godless-multiverse.html

STEPHEN HAWKING'S new book The Grand Design sparked a furore over whether physics can be used to disprove the existence of God. But few have noted that the idea at the core of the book, M-theory, is the subject of an ongoing scientific debate – specifically over the very aspect of the theory that might scrap the need for a divine creator.

That the laws of nature in our universe are finely tuned for life seems miraculous, leading some to invoke divine involvement. But if there is amultiverse out there – a multitude of universes, each with its own laws of physics – then the conditions we observe may not be unique.

Hawking suggests that M-theory, the leading interpretation of string theory, calls for a multiverse. Others are divided over the strength of this link. "My own opinion is that we don't understand the theory well enough to be able to say whether there is one single universe or a multitude of universes," says M-theorist Michael Duff of Imperial College London.

---

"It's dangerous to pin your beliefs on any theory of physics," Duff adds, "because it might turn out to be wrong. But if Stephen wants to stick his neck out, I wish him good luck."

Good advice.

It's dangerous to pin your beliefs on any theory of the existence of god(s), I'll add, because it might turn out to be wrong. But if anyone wants to stick his neck out, I wish him good luck.
