Wouldn't have it any other way, although I might get it "double" if it gets traded (as most of IDW's stuff). But this is one comic where I won't be waiting for the TPB for a first reading.

Is there a superhero as resistant to physical injury as Bethany?Danny doesn't seem to be nearly as fast as the Flash, but could he match or outpace Quicksilver? Are Gillian and Deadman's powers of possession "equal," or are there limits one has that the other does not? Is Jack as strong as Colossus or the Thing? The Hulk? How does Jasmine's acrobatic ability compare to that of the Beast or Nightcrawler? Are Nathan's powers on par with Superman's telescopic or x-ray vision?

I'm down for two copies, myself. I have a friend who fell out of comics who I want to surprise with one.

I knew that where I was going to leave things -- one character in particular -- at the "end" of NEXT MEN would mean I'd need to do something, even just a miniseries perhaps, to revisit that world. (The one character in particular is Jazz, so right away, how could I not go back?) By the way, the actual TITLE is not "That Which Lies Beyond". I'll keep the real title my little secret for a while, if'n you all don't mind!

Is there a superhero as resistant to physical injury as Bethany?•• Luke Cage maybe? Danny doesn't seem to be nearly as fast as the Flash, but could he match or outpace Quicksilver? •• Probably not. Are Gillian and Deadman's powers of possession "equal," or are there limits one has that the other does not? •• Possession is a power that is difficult to quantify. It's sort of an "on/off" scenario. Is Jack as strong as Colossus or the Thing? The Hulk? •• No How does Jasmine's acrobatic ability compare to that of the Beast or Nightcrawler? •• No Are Nathan's powers on par with Superman's telescopic or x-ray vision? •• No. In keeping with the "realistic" aspect of my handling of NEXT MEN, I tried to keep their powers as "un-comicbook" as possible. Now, me, I LOVE comicbook style powers, but that was just not the way I wanted to go with the Next Men. One of the ways in which I addressed this was by avoiding the implied secondary powers that go with so many comicbook style powers. Danny has no enhanced strength for instance (except in his legs), so, unlike the Flash or Quicksilver, he tires very quickly when he exerts himself.

No. In keeping with the "realistic" aspect of my handling of NEXT MEN, I tried to keep their powers as "un-comicbook" as possible. ---That's what I thought. In fact, it's one of the many things I like about the Next Men. Bethany's skin is incredibly tough, but she can't bench press a Buick. Danny can run really fast, but can't travel back and forth in time or vibrate through walls. Jack is stronger than any man has a right to be, but bullets don't bounce off of his skin. Jazz can run up walls, but her hands and feet don't adhere to their surface. Nathan can see on myriad wavelengths, but can't shoot beams of force or heat from of his eyes. [edited for redundancy]

JB: "Okay now, before anybody gets TOO excited, let me say this:The good folk at IDW have promised me I can have NEXT MEN running until I finish my story, and they have also expressed definite interest in the sequel series. BUT, if the book is selling, like, eight copies a month by the time the fifth issue comes out, I will release them from that promise. It's only fair."

This is excellent news - I really like how IDW has handled JB's work. With both new issues and trades, they have done a great job in keeping JB's work out there for people like me who dig JB's stories. The fact that they would give JB room to finish a landmark series shows that they invest in and trust talented people to do their thing. Especially a singular work like this.
I've already expressed how grateful I am to JB for revisiting this title, but this is a good chance to thank Chris Ryall and everyone at IDW. "Next Men" has always been a favorite of mine and since it is a cast of characters that only JB can show us, I'm so grateful to IDW for the commitment.

So, this is kind of a weird way to revisit the series: I started at the end and I am working my way backwards. Actually, I first re-read the four parts of "Lies" in order. Then, I have been reading backwards from issue # 26 issue by issue. I this way, I have been noticing the last appearances of characters before the series went on hiatus. I have noticed the most recent appearances of Gillian and Chrissie, Control (Urk!) and Danny's friend Joshua. The last issue I read was issue # 22. This features the last scene showing Jack. (Not the fake Jack--I am not counting him.) He seemed so resigned. I suppose the circumstances are more than enough to explain a lack of enthusiasm. He knows what the right thing to do is, and it is probably not going to be very pleasant or fun. But he is resigned to do his duty. I find something almost Captain America-ish about him. As a side note, I checked the "Active Topics" and no one had posted to this thread for over a day. What, can there be other things going on in people's lives than the Next Men? Inconceivable!

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. (Inigo Montoyo). What is the countdown any way for us to be blessed with a return to the Next Men? It is December? Is there a count down clock started? I for one am very excited.
