Since some of you like to see the PROCESS, I thought I'd share this page of pencils before they get inked. Won't tell you much about what's happening in the story -- and, once again, I ask that those who are so inclined resist the urge to speculate, on the off chance you strike accidentally upon what's behind this scene, and thus spoil it for others.

Thanks for sharing, JB.

JB, did you keep your Next Men ideas written down anywhere, or are you going from memory?

All memory. And it's been quite the experience, to have everything come tumbling out of the dark corners into which its been crammed for the past fifteen years!

Wow, that's impressive.  Is that how it usually goes for you?  Do you normally "keep it all upstairs" when working on a project, or do you plot stuff out on paper?

JB, any other "older" or cool ideas spilling out as well for non-Next Men projects?  It must all be quite liberating to be able to get all of that out of your head.

Yes. I used to keep a notebook for jotting down ideas, back when I first started writing, but I didn't hang onto it for long. I found that once the ideas were written down, I felt "locked in", no wiggle room.

Also, over the years, I have relied on my memory to tell me when ideas are maybe not so good as they appear at first blush -- mainly by forgetting them!

Cool page. JB does great 19th century. I loved the cowboy Smallville in Generations.

An important lesson I have learned for drawing the 19th Century is "keep it thick!". There was not a lot in the way of light fabrics or fine tooling. Not outside the larger urban areas, anyway!

Looking at the penciled page the word that popped into my mind is "montage" when I was thinking of the panel placement. It suggest a bit of a cinematic approach to this sequence.

Puts me in the mood to rewatch Sergio Leone's Man Without a Name series.

JB, thanks for sharing these pages with us.

Please do keep up with these small glimpses ... it's still a long couple of months until the series is out and these small teasers are a nice way of waiting for the book to finally reach our hands.

BTW,  what working process are you using on this new series?
