Man, I guess that black lady is going to have it rough judging from the outfit she's wearing on the cover of issue 32?

I just ordered the hand-drawn cover using the JB Forum link to the Discount Comic Book Service. An original John Byrne sketch for just over $30 -- what a great deal! And when I visit the local comics store this weekend, I'm going to start a pull for this series, the first title I'll have asked the store to pull in a long, long time.

One thing's for sure, this issue, with it's subtle and subdued cover colour palette, is going to look very different to all the books on the shelf around it. A welcome change from all the digital dayglow we see served up as covers these days.

Awesome coloring job. One of the rare instances in which JB art looks better in color! Great cover!

Y'know, when JBNM # 1 (Part Deux) comes out, this thread should probably be retitled, "A Flame About This High".

Yes -- now if we can just keep the minibrains from declaring this minimalist approach to be "cheap looking" and "unfinished". Perhaps even their perennial favorite, "rushed"! (BTW -- you WILL see ALL of those a few times, from the parrots.)

Chris Geary wrote (way back at http://www.byrnerobotics.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=35928 &PN=1&TPN=22 ):
"[...] I really like the line from Jasmine's backside around to her leg on the third panel."
Hmm. To me, the third panel is the close-up on the gun. When faced with ambiguous panel order, I choose left-to-right first, then top-to-bottom.
John Byrne wrote:
"[...] I promise you I will not start telling you I 'always' intended my tale to be 'The Tragedy of Aldus Hilltop'!!"
LOL. :-)
Also:
* I'm very happy with the preview artwork. I wasn't sure what style would be used--present-day Byrne, classic Byrne, something in-between--but it looks like it fits perfectly with the original JBNM.
* I'm glad the covers won't be painted. I liked the "regular" covers better than the Gary Cody paintings, except for the silhouette/fireball one. I think I was the only one, judging from the letter column.
* I'll miss the letter column. Sure, there's this forum, where there's a good chance Mr. Byrne will answer your questions, and that's an important, good thing too. But it's also nice to sit down to read a paper comic and see readers and creators interact in the pages of that comic.
* I'll miss the Legend moai. I love moai in and of themselves, and the Legend moai was my favourite of all moai drawings.
* So, Mr. Byrne isn't lettering the book? I hope that whoever does letter it uses the original JBNM font. I especially hope (as someone else did earlier) that it isn't the lettering from the Star Trek titles.
* If casting a live actor for Hilltop, my choices are Ray Wise (for example, as the Devil on Reaper) today, or Frank Langella back during the original run of JBNM. (I think I even created a graphic to show this, way back in another thread where we were talking about casting comic characters in general.) Hilltop is an interesting case because his face started off with a lot of "character," looking more like an old rich Texan, then became quite classically handsome during the biographical sequences showing his association with Sathanas from the 1950s to 1990s and onward into his deception of Jazz; then finally I found his looks became somewhat fluid immediately after his powers kicked in. I blame his powers!
* Back in the old run, I picked up on the Hilltop/Sathanas clues right away. I wish I'd thought to write in and say so at the time, so I could prove it! Of course, we all figured it out before Hilltop himself did!
* Hilltop looks pretty mean in that preview page. Of course, that could be Van Damme, but I thought he was on his way to being the nicest president in history, thanks to Amanda...maybe she's not looking just then!
* I'm glad the time travelling is more than just to the dinosaur era.
* On that new cover, Tony is in slave clothing--except for her shoes, which appear to be modern running shoes. And Nathan's eyes (I think that's Nathan) are normal! I haven't felt this excited about preview images in a long time.
Edited to add:
* I like the colouring on the chess cover!
* Sorry about the long post, but if it's any consolation, it's because I read through the whole thread first before posting, and had a lot of feedback stored up.

So, Mr. Byrne isn't lettering the book? I hope that whoever does letter it uses the original JBNM font. That's the plan! ++ Tony is in slave clothing--except for her shoes, which appear to be modern running shoes. They're not. They're vintage shoes that saw their better days LONG before Tony found herself wearing them! I was surprised, looking back over the pertinent issues, to be reminded that Tony, when grabbed by the Mysterious Figure in Armor had actually been barefoot!

That would be Tony, Sam. JB has already put her through the ringer a few times, so she's had practice dealing with tough situations. Rereading the previous issues all in a clump, I was struck by the number of times poor Tony was on the receiving end of some pretty serious sh*t! Things are not going to be getting a whole lot easier for her -- but, then, it's not going to be any kind of picnic for the rest of the gang, either! And, of course, looking over the back issues I was made again aware that Nathan was really the only one who didn't have some kind of nastiness befall him. Not sure why he was spared! I guess I should correct that oversight this time 'round!

The issue 32 cover shot of Tony keeps reminding me of Harriet Tubman.
