When JBNM went into hibernation, I said I had about 20 issues more story to tell, which seemed like a good guess, based on my approach to the series the first time around. There, I let the stories "tell themselves", allowing them to drift off on sidebars and take as many issues as they needed to get from Point A to Point Z. Mind you, the arcs still seemed to work out at six issues apiece, so obviously the "decompression" (not a term I would have used!) was under control! As I sort thru the elements I want to include in the new series, it begins to seem as if 20 issues was a bit generous. If I hit ONLY the points I have been carrying in my head for the last 15 years -- and there are still a LOT of them! -- 12 seems like a more likely number. Altho, I guess I could call Rob Liefeld and see if he still wants to do that crossover with YOUNGBLOOD. . .

Incidentally, one of the things that proved an interesting exercise, working on the "flashback" elements for the first issue, was finding unobtrusive ways to subdue the 1990s fashions! Altho JBNM is set "in the future" (and ain't I glad I did not specify just how far, as Frank and Dave did in MARTHA WASHINGTON!) I drew pretty contemporary outfits for the characters, especially the females. Plenty of padded shoulders and miniskirts!Fortunately, everyone gets a change of clothes by the end of the issue, or the beginning of 32/2 at the latest -- save for one character, whose outfit was not particularly "topical" anyway!

Whether it's 12 or 20 issues, I look forward to seeing how Next Men unfolds over the course of these issues. I'm especially interested in seeing where JB goes with the various plot threads left dangling at the end of issue 30.

John-- Your Star Trek work for IDW has been popping up on the IDW iPad application. Although I always thought I was someone who would insist on reading comics in the traditional format, I have to say I quite enjoy the iPad / comics experience, as well. Especially for titles that can be harder to find in the stores (like IDW). (And your art looks great on the tablet device too.) I've also noticed that IDW is now putting out your early Next Men work electronically. Any plans to do a simultaneous paper / electronic release of the new book? Given the problems your recent creator owned work has had in the stores, seems like a great alternate avenue.

Rereading JBNM last month, I didn't feel like the fashions were dated at all! I think you kept it simple and sleek in and I think it's aged very well!

I signed up for a pull list to get JBNM this weekend. First time in about 6-7 years! The owner was working when I was in and it was good to hear he'd intended to stock the series anyway as a long-time JB fan. (Modern Myths, Northampton MA)

I'd rather take 12 issues than none, but... JB, at this point, do you have any interest in further exploring the world of Next Men or its characters beyond this particular story?
