Great covers! I especially like the chess pieces cover.

That would be great to see some actual Eaglemoss figures of the Next Men!

Hey JB,

Since the original run was essentially a realistic view of super-powered characters and the new run is going to be a realistic view of time travel (as I understand it anyway) do you have any future plans to do a realistic "cosmic" story? Any space travel in the Next Men's future?

RE: cover to JBNM 32 (and what it's supposed to mean)

Hmmm... our heroes are trapped in the Civil War period? WWI period? Both (?!) Neither (?!)

Anyway, I think John Byrne has this unique and elegant ability to deal with time-travel like no one else does (take OMAC for instance, the loop was neatly done here, or Sathanas meeting himself in the past...).

I've always wondered why John was so impassioned by the travel thru time theme.

••

The first "grown up" science fiction novel I read was CITY AT WORLD'S END, by Edmond Hamilton. Altho time travel is only the starting point for the story, the concept blew me away. Not long after reading it I stumbled upon the Classics Illustrated version of THE TIME MACHINE by H.G. Wells, and my love of the concept was cemented.

The main thing I like about time travel stories is that there are no rules, save those the writer creates for him/herself. Thus, unless operating in a "shared universe" (in which sometimes stupid and restrictive rules can be imposed from "on high") I am free to set up my own framework and let my stories unfold within it.

NEXT MEN has, of course, been a kind of "stealth" time travel story all along, but the time travel elements have been subordinate to others. Now, they are going to come to the front, and, without somebody else's structured universe to "cramp my style", I am going to explore some of the more outré elements of the concept.

I see that Chris has mentioned on his blog that Ronda Pattison will be coloring NEXT MEN, so I can repeat that here without jumping any guns.

She did a bang up job, I thought, on last year's ANGEL Halloween special. I look forward to her moody and subdued palette on JBNM.

That's really good news - Ronda Pattison did a wonderful job on Angel v Frankenstein and the Lorne special.

I still can't believe we are looking at new Next Men covers.  I keep clicking on the previous page - those are amazing cover images.

This presents a bit of a dilemma for me. The past several years my monthly comic book buying has dwindled to zero. I've been buying most of JB's Star Trek issues, but with my increasing workload, it's been very difficult to find time to make it down to Jim Hanley's Universe in Manhattan on my way home before they sell out. Plus, Hanley's seriously lowered their comic book supply the past few months. So, I've found myself not being able to complete JB's Trek mini-series. No major biggie there, since TPBs of those series come out not long after they complete (I was able to buy Leonard McCoy #1, but not #2, so I have the TPB on pre-order from Amazon...I ended up finishing Schism with the TPB as well), and it appears that IDW counts the TPB sales numbers against the viability of JB's future mini-series work, so no guilt about "waiting for the trade" there.

But Next Men is different, since it's an on-going series, and the monthly sales of its relaunch will be more closely considered, I'd imagine. I wouldn't want WFTT to be detrimental...besides, I'm going to be eager to check them out as soon as possible...but with my hectic schedule it's going to be hard to keep up.

So my question is, does anyone recommend a good online shop for buying monthly issues? Amazon just seems to deal with the TPB market only.
