My LCS is across the street from my gym, but I usually can get some great deals on Amazon.com for trades and hardcovers. So anyone who's on here can easily get JB's books and keep JB in royalty payments. Let's all do our part!

There was some definite LCS sales clusterf*** going on around LABRATS. I still don't have a complete run of that series because I raninto such problems with a DIFFERENT LCS in a DIFFERENT TOWN. Thisowner could not stop complaining because he got burned somehow orderingmore issues than he wanted. No, wait, he special back-ordered issuesspecifically for me and then I disappeared for a few months because ofwhatever was going on in my life at the time, too poor to afford acouple of $3.00 books for a while. My own fault, I guess.

Francis, I don't mean to be rude but in this instance you were the one at fault not the retailer

Here's a thought --- You should all know by now that I will not berevealing any of my plans, but if you keep making guesses, there is agood likelihood that you will hit upon some things just by chance, thusspoiling them for yourselves and others. So, ixnay on the essesguay, okay?
No guesses from me JB, I look forward to whatever new direction you take JBNM in.

Back during the Speculator Boom, I coined the term "Quality Dollars"to describe what some retailers seemed to be seeking. Somehow, it wasapparently in their heads that a dollar made from, say, SPAWN orYOUNGBLOOD was "better" than a dollar made from NEXT MEN or DANGER:UNLIMITED. There certainly were MORE dollars to be made fromthose other books, to be sure -- but in the end, a dollar was a dollarwas a dollar. A happy customer was the real "quality" an intelligentretailer would be after.
Saddly JB the retailer will generally go after the more dolars books.

If not for the fact that my LCS, Foundation's Edge in Raleigh does a good job of carrying a wide variety of comics, I would not have gotten Lab Rats because until the first issue came out, I had not heard or seen a single promotion for it. Seeing a new Byrne comic was a complete surprise. Likewise, DC's recent reprinting of Marvel's color Doc Savage series. No clue that something like that was coming out. It's also the only store I've seen that tries to carry the pulp reprints which these days make up about half my purchase each month going by dollar amount.
Got a job interview coming up in High Point. As much as I hope I get the job, I'll hate changing stores. Acme is good about carrying everything, better than any other store I've been to in fact. But the owners/workers are unabashedly fans of almost all the stuff I cannot stand and don't refrain from bashing other creators and such within earshot of customers. I never feel very welcome there. They carry Byrne comics there, I picked up the second issue of Leonard McCoy that apparently sold out at my regular store but I know they aren't fans. At least they don't let their tastes interfere with what they stock the store with.
I recently reviewed Ultimate Comics new store in Chapel Hill. Very nice store, kid and family friendly, professional workers, a focus on trades of all types and despite my very oddball choices, enthusiastic about my purchases. Only thing I didn't care for was that they pre-bag and board all new comics thus making it difficult to peruse the new releases. I had a passing interest in checking out the new Birds of Prey now that Gail is back on the title but wasn't going to purchase it cold, so I left the store with fewer comics than I would have otherwise.

Distinct from the "stealth marketing" Marvel gave HIDDEN YEARS, I thought DC did a good job of promoting LAB RATS.

If they did it was probably through Wizard and the Previews book, neither of which I pick up on a regular basis. As noted, the owner is pretty good at getting most stuff and I've known him going on twenty years so he's also good at pulling random stuff he thinks I might be interested in, giving me first dibs on much of the pulp and comic strip stuff that he only gets one or two copies in.
This made me think of when I was a kid reading comics, DC would regularly have a page advertising a bunch of their books presumably out the same month with small bw pics of covers. Yet, I almost never saw those actual issues and always wondered about the stories behind those covers. I still remember one of Jimmy Olsen in a wetsuit climbing over the rail of a boat where Lois Lane is unconscious and a concealed skeletal figure in the foreground looking on. Spooky and tantalizing as heck.
And, Yes, I'm looking forward to Next Men (just to get back to topic). I think my favorite part of the old series was Mark IV and how his story ultimately dovetailed to the main one. Now, if we can get Danger Unlimited, the Torch of Liberty and Golgotha back! Writing Mark's name, struck me I actually know a Mark Ivey.

If not for the fact that my LCS, Foundation's Edge in Raleigh... --- I used to go there sometimes when I was in school at State. Do they still have all of those back issue boxes "up the steps" past the register?

Yep. I don't really peruse back issues these days unless I come aware of something specific I want to see if I can find. Otherwise, I'm happy getting the trades such as of the 1970s Doc Savage stuff. Rick says they still do a very good back issue business though. Partly because he still buys collections and such so he tries to keep it stocked with plenty of roughage as opposed to just whatever comics don't sell each month.

Another neat thing about JBNM is the Action Maxx/Doctor Trogg stuff. I realize they were fictional characters within the Next Men universe, but I'd read a comic about those guys, too!
