Perfect timing, I just ordered Next Men Premiere Edition, Vol. 1.

I need to order Volumes 2 & 3. (I wish Jazz hadn't been left off of that cover!)

to JOHN BYRNE:

John, are you having to go back and read your old Next Men issues to make sure of certain details, etc as you start writing the new stories?

If so, is it strange to read you own work after so long absent?  What goes through your mind was you flick through the pages?

Thanks

Thanks to this news I cracked open my copy of The Compleat Next Men Volume One which had been sitting unread on my shelves since it came out. I followed this up with my Fame and Faith Dark Horse trades and then got my original comics out for the final two arcs.

Wow.

I remember loving this series but I'd forgotten just how truly amazing this story is. JB never get the recognition for his writing but this stuff is pure quality. The plotting is super-tight : nothing is wasted, if it's not a plot point, then it's character development. There are swirls of sub-plots lopping and tying themselves around in knots but it all fits together nicely.

Some random thoughts:

I never realised JB's thing about the real Shakespeare was so in the forefront of his mind back here with several issues starting with quotations attributed to Edward de Vere.

JB: One of the things a lot of readers didn't seem to pick up on was that NEXT MEN was set "in the future".

Yep, noticed loads of video phones and so on.

I'd forgotten how evil Hilltop was in #28. Argh, I really want him to get his comeuppance but we know he survives until 2112 don't we???

I remember stumbling across Next Men in Dark Horse Presents. I was 16 and although it doesn't quite feel like it was yesterday, it doesn't feel like 19 years either... more like 2 or 3. Scary.

JB: I'm hoping you include more of the ongoing comics & comics
culture satire that was threaded through the original series - one of
my favorite aspects.
