I'm glad that readers will be able to jump on board with issue #31 without first having to read anything else. However, I really hope that those who haven't read the first 31 issues of JBNM (and/or 2112) will be "triggered" by the new stuff, and become inspired to pick up the collections at some point. I want as many people as possible to experience those incredible Next Men stories!•• That would be ideal, of course! As I mentioned in another thread, the other day, one of the most destructive phrases that as worked its way into comic reading is "What's a good jumping on point?" Whole "generations" of potential readers have been scared away by the idea that there is no way to simply START READING, as I did lo these many years ago. And it certainly has not helped that far too many writers now THINK in terms of "jumping on points" -- not in the sense that EVERY issue should be one, but that by throwing out a "jumping on point" every once in a while, they are free to ramble on with their lazy, undisciplined, "decompressed" stories. These guys should be tossed into a time machine and sent back to 1956, where they would be forced to write "jumping on point" stories THREE TIMES PER ISSUE!!! Gun to their heads, I'll bet most of these wankers could not write an eight page, done in one story.

Even before I learned the immortal "Every issue is the first issue for somebody" rule, I remembered when I was a kid and started reading the adventures of Superman and Batman. Both characters had been around for about 15 years at that point, yet I was able to step into their stories without a blink. If I knew nothing at the beginning of the first story, I knew all I needed to know by the end. This is something sadly missing in far too many modern comics.
I couldn't agree more. My son has tried to get me to read some titles that he enjoys, but when he brings me a giant stack of issues I have to read first to get "caught up", I am just turned off.

Like many others Next Men is my all time favorite work from JB. Depending on which day of the week you ask me, it is my favorite comic of all time. I was saddened by the news many years ago that JB would suspend publication of Next Men for an undetermined amount of time. I enjoyed his jump to Wonder Woman and his next project to the next. However, everytime I heard there was an end to one run I would get hopeful that this would mean the restart of Next Men. Then another book would be announced and my heart would sink. Only to be revived by whatever cool project JB did instead. When he made the move to IDW I thought this would be catalyst to seeing new Next Men. It took a few years of some great Star Trek and Angel material to come out in the interim. But it's finally happening. I couldn't be more excited. Thank you JB, Chris Ryall and IDW for making this come together. While I'm excited that this new series will be new reader friendly, I'm going back and rereading the old series one more time before December. It's just that good.

I think it will, for me at least, but I don't want to be "pressured" to. It's like when I find a really good book from an author I have never experienced before. I always go and try to find other books by that person. I get giddy when I find a "new" author. It is like mining for gold, yeah the one nugget of gold is great, but man, knowing there is a vain there is even better.

Wow, an announcement ive been waiting for for well over a decade, December cant come soon enough.
JB, will you be continuing the original issue numbering? (the relaunch starting with number 31) I could never understand aside from a strictly sales point of view why publishers continue to give ongoing series new #1 issue.
thanks again for returning to next men!

There was me getting excited about the Crossgen news when this announcement completely slipped under the radar. This is the best comics news I've heard in a long while. Thanks you JB and thank you Chris Ryall for the pestering!

JB, will you be continuing the original issue numbering?•• That's the plan. Altho it needs a little something extra to allow new readers to jump right in, this will, for you Old Timers. be nothing more or less than the Next Issue. (Tho I am probably not going to use the cover I drew originally for 31. The storyline has mutated a bit!)

How did I miss this announcement?!?!?!? **slaps forehead** Incredible news. I've been meaning to buy the "Compleat" volumes, but it made me depressed in thinking there could never be more Next Men. NOW there is! This news makes me very happy!

I know IDW likes to do variant covers for their books. Maybe the original #31 cover could serve as that alternate? I really want to see that cover see print.

JB, are your plans for the finite ending still in place? And was it 50 or 60, I can't recall now?
