This seems more than a little fishy to me.  How 'bout you guys?

Now, Google AdWords comes to BP's aid

Matt to me that shows why we still need strong journalism venues like nightly news and newspapers.

Jodi, those are things we need to safeguard against. Interestingly, in
other parts of the world they use nuclear energy and you don't hear
about too many accidents. Just in this last year, we've had a coal
mine disaster, this gulf oil disaster, a natural gas explosion in Texas...
etc.

Mike I am not saying we shouldn't use nuclear, jury still out on it with me, there are some questions that need to be answered. Where is the waste going?  Are we looking at it without developing cleaner technologies? Is it just the lesser of two evils?   I am just upset that renewable clean technology is not being pushed more.  But I am not naive, big business doesn't want us to have self supplied independent energy. And until it gets so bad we can't stand it anymore, we will continue to get the same thing we have been getting.

Sorry, what do the toxic chemicals buried at Love Canal have to do with nuclear power?

What does Love Canal have to do with nuclear energy?

I would guess that Jodi was thinking of Three Mile Island.

As to rocketing waste into the sun, there's a closer alternative.  The Trojan Points are perfectly stable, and anything put there will stay there unless acted upon by an outside force.  (The Trojans are at 60 degrees ahead of and behind the Moon in its orbit around Earth, so that an equliateral triangle is made if you draw a line from the center of the Earth to the center of the Moon, then to the Trojan Point, then back to the center of the Earth.  The Trojans are relatively small areas of gravitational equilibrium, and are exactly as far away as the Moon is.)

Put the waste there, and it's still there years (decades or centuries or eons) later.  If you find you have a need for it, go get it back.

Or you could put the waste at the site of nuclear bomb test detonations.  Nothing's gonna grow there anyway.  Put up fences and signs that read "Everything beyond this point will die".  Anyone who hops the fence is willfully committing suicide.

Looking forward to the day when controlled fusion is a reality.

Of course, government + military + industrial complex will still find a way to f*** us.

If Jodi really did mean Three Mile Island, then my answer would be that the accident released a trivial amount of radiation that appears to have had absolutely no long-term environmental effects.

As for Chernobyl, I would be very happy to make it mandatory that any new US nuclear facilities NOT be operated by the Soviets.

Here's the simple facts: nuclear energy has the potential to be dangerous if not handled carefully. Pollutants from coal-burning power plants are currently killing tens of thousands of Americans every year.

Solar and wind energies are great supplemental resources, and I think they're worth the investment, but they don't produce anywhere near enough power to be our primary resource.

No I meant the Love Canal, but I wasn't clear on why I mentioned the Love Canal. My poorly written post and use of the Love Canal was in reference to what do we do with the nuclear waste and accidents. If we use nuclear we are going to have waste and there will be accidents. Can we handle those issues? Is some company going to get greedy , cut corners and will we experience a situation even worse then Love Canal or Chernobyl?

Again, these are potential problems that might occur if something went wrong. People are dying now because of coal powered plants that are operating the way they're supposed to.
