ha ha... you guys are talking like you don't know the game. Sure it's "BP", but they call it "British Petrolium" for the same reason people on the right call our Presidnet barack HUSSIEN obama.

Anyway, in other news: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABToOl-xbHE&feature=player_em bedded

Joe Biden = Greatest Vice President of all time.

The company's official name has been "BP" for a couple of decades now. It's like AT&T or HSBC: the initials are now the name.

---

And in a radical departure from the topic at hand, I'd like to ask for the record what AT&T and HSBC once stood for? Because I don't know and I'm curious. While we're at it, the tabloid show TMZ once had a full name too, but I can't recall what it was.

Also, I don't think BP has officially been "BP" for decades (a couple or otherwise) because I'm only 30 and I remember them being called British Petroleum in the late 90's. Not that that's either here or there, but it's been familiar to me for over 10 years, because I made a mental note of it once they started their "Beyond Petroleum" ad campaign, as I thought they'd changed their name from British Petroleum to that.

I thought the whole BP thing was an Americanism, because the U.S.A. loves their shortened titles for everything (X3: The Last Stand, T2: Judgement Day, M:I-2, etc).

I remember long before the current situation, BP was using the tag line "Beyond Petrolium".  It was probably on a commercial or ad.

Brad, just off hand AT&T stands for (stood for?) Atlantic Telephone and Telegraph.  I don't know what HSBC was without looking it up.

Is it Atlantic?  So much for the impervious might of "...if I recall correctly"...

Exxon was nowhere near the same magnitude, and Bopal and Chernobyl were not at all of this nature.

Care to try again?

Not really, my original post specifically mentions both environmental and social damage.
By that, you could also add damage to the Amazon rainforest and a whole host of other industries (Mining etc).

As I said in my original post, BP should be made to pay through the nose for this. But so should other companies causing environmental and social damage throughout the world.

Look, it's the ocean, that makes the damage very visible and mobile. But look at the loss of the coral reef. Look at the damage shipping noises do to whales. These and many more problems are chronic and systemic. This is not. I would love to see these words being addressed to some of the chronic issues.

That is my point and has been since my first post.

HSBC is Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corp.

BP was British Petroleum when I was growing up, but even then was more usually referred to as just BP. Officially it has been just BP for well over a decade, just like British Telecom long ago morphed into BT.

It's an important time for Americans to reflect on the environmental damage American corporations have been party to in other countries. But I don't see any indication in the media that people are even cognizant of this.
