I don't see the article at all the way Joseph does. In my writing class last semester, one thing we learned is that you must write at approximately and eighth grade level for the vast majority of Americans to understand you. Why that is, I have no idea. Maybe the vast majority of Americans simply are not as educated as they would have you believe. The person in the article said the Presidents speech was at a 9.8 grade level. I didn't see anywhere that it was stated that you personally didn't understand it. You don't like Obama, thus you didn't like the speech.

Rep. Joe Barton of Texas actually apologized to BP saying that the $20 billion escrow fund the Obama administration pressured BP to create amounted to a "shakedown", this despite the fact that BP continues to be evasive regarding the oil spill. Relevant quote: "As BP CEO Tony Hayward testified before a House energy panel, Barton apologized to Hayward, characterizing a $20 billion escrow fund that the Obama administration pressured BP to create Wednesday as a "shakedown." "I’m ashamed at what happened in the White House yesterday," said Barton, the ranking Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. "I think it is a tragedy in the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown -- in this case a $20 billion shakedown." Sources: Evasive BP CEO leaves Congress flummoxed

My only concern is that if the Sun's nuclear fusion was suddenly"upset" by all that extra material, would we need to also havecontrol-rod rockets and water-filled rockets standing by? ---- Monte, please tell me you aren't serious. throwing anything into the sun would be like building a bonfire and trying to put it out with a drop of water.---- Stephen Churay, yeah - I wasn't being serious. :-) I was gripped by a tangent and just went with it!
While I'm not a specialist dealing with oil spills and such (though it seems like the ones who are are failing miserably), I believe this hole can be plugged. But what is causing the problem is the industry looking for a way to stop the problem with an eye towards re-using the well afterwards.
Top-Kill? Robots? Golf-Balls? Giant Pincers? Seriously, these are the professionals? What makes this matter even more horrifying, is that there are 3,500 oil rigs (sorry, 3, 499) operating in the Gulf, the operation and safety of each are now in question. With this many rigs, how many realistic measures are ready in the event of a disaster. If Deepwater is any indicator, the answer is one (hoping the blowout valve will close).

Barton has enormous balls and no shame. He takes huge money from big oil. They have contributed over three million dollars to his campaigns thus far, BP included.

Obama has built up a lot of negative reactions here in Britain. His "kick-ass" statement went down quicker than the Titanic with the British public. Putting aside all the BP business, and as an outsider looking in, I'll be shocked if he gets a second term the way things are going.

The British public hopefully realizes the magnitude of this disaster, and that kicking ass doesn't even begin to come close to the strength of language that needs to be used in reference to those ultimately responsible for this spill and the long-term and terrifyingly serious repercussions thereof.
And if they don't, then, respectfully the British public needs to pull their heads out of their asses, lest they get kicked too.

Yeah, those Brits won't be voting for Obama at the rate he's going.

The entire BP congressional hearing made me sick to my stomach. Not just because the executives of BP came in there promising things they won't follow through on (20 billion in reparations) but because it essentially was for show for the American public. The same politicians that receive millions in campaign contributions from the oil companies (both sides) feigning outrage over the incident when the government's ultra lax regulatory standards played a significant role in the whole disaster.

With all due respect, Greg - I don't understand the British outcry about our frustration and rage with BP. BP is the focus of our ire, not the citizens of the UK.
If McDonald's had a similar incident and President Obama threatened to kiss their ass, we wouldn't be hating ourselves, just McDonald's.
Barton's already done a mean job - after he hem & hawed an apology and took back his comment, his fellow party members were outraged that he focused so much public attention on just how tight some politicians are in with the oil industry.

Things I heard today included that Obama forced BP to set up the account and that he did nothing to help the Gulf until his address this week. It's rather exasperating when people just make shit up. At least they could criticize something that the administration has actually done. I loved Jon Stewarts' montage of the last 8 Presidents calling for an end to dependence on foreign oil. That says it all. Folks like Barton and Palin make it more likely Obama gets reelected.
