…his superb inking of JB's Superman…

••

At the risk of being accused of speaking ill of the dead (which is not the case), for historical accuracy it should be mentioned again, here, that I found out years later that Dick had not inked anything but a few figures in the Batman issue of MAN OF STEEL. The rest he farmed out to his studio, as was his habit in those days. Most of MoS was inked by Frank McLaughlin.

Had Dick for a teacher in Sequential Illustration in Parsons thanks in part to his life long friend Murray Tinkleman.  Hung out at plenty at Continuity back in the day and Dick was always helpful, gracious and with a quick wit or had a story to tell.

One of his inking secrets he shared was that you don't have to connect all the lines....

adios, amigo

Something very apparent in the work of Terry Austin, another of Dick's students/assistants. (Terry inked most of the backgrounds on the original SUPERMAN vs THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.)

That broken line approach, however, is the bane of computer colorists!

Absolutely, John!

The key in Dick;s inking theory was that the original work was done large than printed version and in reproduction the lines would appear to close up

Since older comics were colored in marker and coded for printing, it looked fine in the finished book  as opposed to today's coloring which often has no correlation between the luminescence of a computer monitor and how it appears on the finished (now glossy) page - often too dark.

RIP

My favorite DC inker.  I'm glad I got to meet him.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Sad news. One of my favorite artists.

There's a nice overview of his career at newsfromme.com.

Great memories on great books. A time when there was a love for what you did.

Dick Giordano will be missed.

RIP

Very sad. A key man for DC for many years. Loved his inks over Neal Adams -- a wonderful pairing.
