Michael, It's been a lot of years since university and I bow to the expertise of any English majors out there who are taking comparative myth in far greater detail than I ever did, but it's my understanding the Greeks were the first to create their very detailed pantheon of gods to explain the ways of the world. The Romans had their own gods, customs and religious practices, but they were not as richly developed as the Greeks. When the Greeks were conquered by the Romans, the invaders took a liking to these newly discovered myths and exported them back home, integrating them into their own mythology and changing the names of the Greek gods so they would sound more Roman and be more acceptable. And it wasn't just the Greeks from whom the Romans stole religion. The Romans also plundered religious practices from many of the other cultures they conquered, and grafted them into their own belief systems. So while there are many similarities between Greek and Roman mythology, to make the claim that they are pretty much the same is akin to claiming that the Canadian and American political systems are pretty much the same. Yes, both are democracies, both hold free elections and both borrow their traditions from a common predecessor (England), but there are significant differences in the details and practices.
