I'm surprised there are that many folks with golden age comics. Not that they aren't available, but that people are that interested in them. That's great!
My oldest comics is probably from 1970. I've sold off my back issues as reprints become available.

At the start of modern comics fandom, in the sixties, there was a strong focus on Golden Age comics. The relative lack of interest in older comics today is a function of changing attitudes, a collector's market where nobody trashes old comics, so there's not much scarcity of issues from 1970 on, and readily available reprint material of most comics from the "big two" from the sixties that anyone would otherwise have to seek out and collect.

Michael:
When I first read your question, I assumed you meant what is the oldest comic that I had personally purchased (and still have). Here are both my oldest comic (CA Comics #5, 1941) and the first comic I ever collected (Incredible Hulk #202, 1976). Despite the steep price tag, I've actually read the Captain America comic more than once, much to my enjoyment. May the Gods of Speculative Collecting forgive me!

I'm not sure actually. Probably Avengers #57:
(Not an actual scan of the copy I own.)

Avengers 57 really is one of the greatest covers of all time. Maybe it isn't the most iconic, but I can think of very few others that make me go "wow" as much as this one does.

It's a fabulous cover, William, and it owes much to Jack Kirby, with the first appearance of the Golden Age Vision in 1940....
