No i'm sure there are some things, however I doubt I will be able to affect the economic and politcal policies of this country too much.
Not a believer in Chaos Theory and the Butterfly Effect, Lee?
Maybe I'm a cockeyed optimist, but I believe real change happens one person at a time. If one percent of this country volunteered an average of one hour a week of community service, that would be 156 million hours of donated labour generated in the course of a year. What's the economic value of that?
Think about the playgrounds that could be built, the creek beds that could be cleaned up, the affordable housing that could be constructed, the blind that could have someone read to them, the elderly shut-ins who would enjoy some human contact, the children who could be mentored, the rescue missions that could be helped, the non-profit organizations that could benefit. And that's only one percent of the population. Imagine if we could get two percent of the population invested like that. Or ten percent.
There is no end of worthy causes that are in need of a helping hand and no end of opportunities to use your skills to contribute back to society. And together, collectively, with but a small investment of our time, we can affect the kinds of changes and improvements in this country that Washington politicians can only dream about.
