JB, can you share your technique for integrating type/lettering in the background? Thanks.•• It's printed onto the self-adhesive plastic film, Copi-Tak, I used to use for my lettering.

Are the posters behind Ben considered additional characters in terms of having to pay for them?•• Jim and I decided that the whole poster counts as one character. We also decided that that would be specific to this image only!

As it happens, Jason, the mutant in the commission's full name is Franklin Benjamin Richards.•• When I had the FF move to Connecticut (long before I did!) and go "under cover" I had them adopt the last name "Benjamin". My thinking was that there was an unseen scene in which Reed and Sue explained to Franklin that from now on he would just stop using "Richards" and tell anyone who asked that his name was Franklin Benjamin. Even in those days before the Internet turned Being An Idiot into a national pass-time, there were, of course, people who were determined Not To Get It, and who wrote in to tell me what an idiot I was, as Franklin's name would now be "Franklin Bemjamin Benjamin". sigh Incidentally, the scene in which Franklin's full name was reveal stands as one of the most moving, imho, Stan and Jack ever crafted: (What can I say? I cry at card tricks.)

Some of the line work really reminds me of Wrightson.

JB - thanks for posting those FF pages!
I've always loved the look on Ben's face when he finds out the name!
And the words Stan fit into his mouth were PERFECT!
Ben looks great in a suit!

Ben looks great in a suit!•• Another reminder of the magic that comics have lost to such a great degree. Ben could throw on a suit, or a trenchcoat and hat, and walk around on the streets of New York without drawing too much attention to himself. In the early days, the Hulk could do the same. Characters shrank when they donned civilian clothing. This was especially noticeable in the case of Ben's feet! And, you know, when I was 11, 12, 13 -- the target audience -- it did not bother me in the least. Today, a drawing like this would set the internet ablaze!

John, this work is simply stunning. DOFP was the frist "time-travel" comic I ever read and it blew my mind. Just like this image does.
