I was just warching a James Cagney biography on TCM that made me think of this thread. By the late 40s he was desperate to escape his gangster image, but after his more personal films bombed, he was reluctantly forced to return to the genre. And if he hadn't been, we would never have been blessed with "White Heat."

And just now as I was typing this and listening to Sirius in the background, one of Eric Clapton's hundreds of unlistenable solo songs happened to start playing. While I've no doubt that "God" is far more technically proficient on the guitar today that he was 4+ decades ago, that still doesn't change the fact that virtually everything he's done since Cream has been utter shite.

Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker make anybody look good.

But seriously, their reunion concert is great stuff.  Grab the DVD if you haven't!

Eric White: I just read through that thread, Peyton. Paul Sonderstedt called JB  a "dweeb"???

Why?

-----
Here's exactly what I said over at Comicon...

In regards to the thread over at JB's Forum started by Erik Larsen, there are a few dweebs over there (including JB...and yes, I even call my friends a family dweebs, sometimes!
grin) that believe that Mr. Larsen had an ulterior motive.
I personally do not believe this. The post seemed legit, to me...and very insightful at that.

-----
Regardless of what others may determine what a "dweeb" is, in this particular instance, a dweeb is someone who is acting a little nutty. Like I mention, I even call my friends & family dweebs sometimes.

-----
That said, even though I firmly believe that the vast majority of the time, Erik Larsen comes here NOT with intentions of goodwill, in this particular case I believe that he was genuinely curious about what some people may have thought of his hypothesis.

Mind you, I believe that JB is certainly right in believing that Erik decided to post this here mainly because the words your old stuff is better in synonymous with JB, so here was the best place to discuss this very subject.

When JB mentions that Erik Larsen was hiding behind his deer-in-the-headlight, "I'm-SUCH-a-HUGE-John-Byrne-Fan" facade...I think he hit the nail on the head.

However, I also believe that (in this particular case) there are two sides to this coin and most of what Erik Larsen writes about in his initial post in this thread is very insightful.

Do I personally believe that Erik Larsen's hypothesis pertains to JB? Not even close.

-----
Bottom line (took you long enough!), I just felt JB & a few here were acting like dweebs. No biggie. That was just a pebble in the ocean of positivity that I read around here. Don't take it as an insult (as that was not my intention), but as a slug in the arm that I usually reserve for those I respect.

Vinny Valenti:  Having seen Paul S.' comments on newsaramicon from time to time, I suspect that supporting JB is not his actual goal....

Oooh, a conspiracy theorist? Tell me more!

Arc,

I meant, does anyone care about Liefeld, not you.

I hope you didn't take my post as an insult.

Okay, is was an insult, but is was directed at the talentless Liefeld.

I remember the pages didn't look good. Not even with Karl Kesel inking.

Okay, small confession.  When the H&D mini came out, I picked it up.  I remember thinking the art was raw, but there was some good stuff in there.

It wasn't until I saw Liefeld's stuff for Marvel that I realized how much work Kesel had done to save it.

Because the trade is much cheaper than buying individual issues.

But the trade does not exist (at any price!) if the series is not a success. And if no one buys the individual issues, the series will not be a success.

Why is this so hard to understand?

I think Liefeld's got talents.  I'm just not sure they lie in the arena of penciling.  Though I'd be interested in seeing his inks on someone's else's pencils (someone good).
