Just so some of you guys know, Liefeld credits Mark Gruenwald for giving him his first work in comics.

I thought his first work was HAWK & DOVE for DC. Was it not?

it looked good? You understand that your wait-for-the-trade attitude leads
to the cancellation of books, right?

There are several factors that maker me want to buy the book...Primarily the character, secondly the Art then MAYBE whos writing it...

I really have NO interest in The DEMON as a character..ok, scratch that one...The Art looks much darker/interesting than I'd seen from JB in awhile..check that in the PLUS column! So, it more or less a draw...." Meh, put it back..wait for the trade.."

The MAIN reason why I DONT pick up things that MILDLY interest me, is budget!. I have become TIRED of buying things..sometimes 3 or 4 times!!

JLA/Avengers is  aperfect example..I HAD to buy it as it came out..I LOVED that series..CHARACTERS/ARTIST/WRITER/FORMAT..all good and interesting to me...
TPB!!??? Excellent!!  Now I can get it all in one chunk to pick up! WHAT!?? DELUXE OVERSIZED HARDCOVER!!?? With compendium script and sketches??? ACK!!

So, I know, i know..nobody twisted my arm...but I have become exhausted buying things MULTIPLE times...and I do it  A LOT.

So yeah, had there beena DEMON tpb, I would have picked it up...If I hear continuous good things about an older series, I'll try to track it down in the used/quarter bin...and then I feel like I'm a kid again tracking down issues...which I dont REALLY mind...fun actually.

So, yeah...the MUST HAVE monthly reads  for me are fewer..but I buy FAR MORE tpbs than I EVER used to...!

I'm not 100% sure but it is probably one of those situations where he was given work from both companies around the same time and the DC stuff was published first.

Blevins compared to Liefeld is like comparing a fully working car to a broken toy bicycle. They both have wheels (or we assume they both do!) but that's just about it.

And, David, of all the X-Men issues, you got to pick a JOHN BYRNE issue to confuse with a Liefeld one?!?!? That hurt me, physically!!! ;-)

Stephen, I've been a JB fan since the late 70's. I think Blood of the Demon is some of his best artwork ever. If you can find the back issues pick 'em up.

Stephen,

What Paul said.  BotD is truly a highlight of JB's career.  If you need evidence just check out Paul's CAF gallery.  I think he owns every page from the entire series except the one I managed to beat him to!

Bret Blevins has always been a favorite of mine.  From New Mutants to Sleepwalker to Batman just some great stuff.  He is on my short list for artists to get commissions from.

BotD was some of my favorite JB artwork.  This may have been surpassed by the recent  and amazing work done on the Angel mini.  Maybe we should start saying that his old stuff was not as good!  =)

Boy, the nostalgia I'm experiencing right now is amazing.  Maybe nostalgia is the wrong word, deja vu may be more accurate.

I am referring to Magnus' old board where flame wars were the order of the day.

IMO, Mr. Larsen did not come here to get our backs up just as I didn't mean to ignite the Tony's Polls debacle.

Check out my post at the Comicon board: http://www.comicon.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&N umber=550897&page=6

It explains my personal theory on the "Your old stuff was better" crap especially as it pertains to Mr. Byrne's work.  Also, Mr. Larsen comes to JB's defense on an earlier page.

Now, I'm not exactly defending Erik - Especially as I blame the formation of Image (Was that an apropos moniker for a publisher, or what?), Wizard, and that Jemas guy for the ruination of modern comics.

BTW, since most of us who posted on the Magnus board are presumably posting here now, how about letting me know by posting your old nom du guerre.  I'm always a sucker for a good ol' old home week.
