I don't like his newest stuff as much as I loved his earlier stuff...mostly because i find he draws his heads much larger than he used to...

••

Quite the opposite, in fact. One of the things Shooter used to bust my hump over was drawing heads too big.

Could larger heads be an illusion from your drawing bodies less bulky than you used to, John?  I notice that most of all in your more recent work.  Characters look skinnier, and, to my eye, have larger heads.  But again, I suppose it could be the former fooling my eye into seeing the latter.

Love that Joe Kubert Hawkman cover! I bought that issue off of E-bay a few years ago and it's a prized possession of mine.

To me, that Hawkman looks kind of Rob Liefeld-ish. But at least that art has the vitality, dynamism and above all heroism that today's younger artists are completely blind to.

Comparing Joe's Hawkman drawing to something Rob would've done? I just threw up in my mouth a little <g>....

I can see the surface similarities, though.

Kubert is drawing his interpretation from his inner
vision.

Liefeld is "drawing" his impression of someone else's
interpretation of someone else's vision ...

... badly.

Some features of reality -- like crisp tension lines
running across the thoracic muscles -- are bound to draw
in the eye of an illustrator. Perhaps Kubert's and
Liefeld's eyes assign the same importance to visual cues
of power under tension.

I know. There shouldn't be a comparison . I don't even know why the Liefeld name keeps showing up in here every now and then.

+++++++++++++++++

Because he's a perfect example of an artist who no one in their right mind should EVER copy?

It has been mentioned a few times that there aren't any artists really mimicking JB's style of art but the way it's being presented is certainly misleading.  Kerry Gammil, Paul Pelletier, Dale Keown, Vic Bridges....it seems like there are many that have been directly inspired and strived to emulate JB's style.

Early Jim Lee certainly owes a lot to John Byrne. Hell, I still see some Byrne in his stuff today. Well, when he actually gets something out.

Maybe some of these guys need to be influenced by his work ethic instead of his work.

Looking at your latest stuff, I'd say you have a great deal more to learn from JB.

(I'm just being mildly critical, the same as you are, Stephen.)

Not needed, Joe. Not even remotely. Steve S. is a really decent dude and a better than decent artist.
