In the interest of full disclosure, I'll say this:
I purchased every issue of Freak Force.
BUT it was for the simple fact that the artwork resembled
the art of John Byrne so closely.*
Excellent move to attract customers actually, hire a clone to bring in a segment of collectors that wouldn't normally have an interest otherwise.
The John Byrne influence sold me on those comics.

*Closely enough to please the eye, anyway.
Vic Bridges lacked certain things that identified pages
as JB but still managed to evoke the JB linework.
The figures were somewhat stiff, but the storytelling wasn't
too bad, but I know that was just due to Keith Giffen's
breakdowns.

I'll buy comics that even remotely resemble art by John Byrne.

I just wasn't prompted to post until recently

******************

So let me get this straight, you're such a huge fan of JB that you've been coming here for years and never felt prompted to post until Erik Larsen posted something you disagreed with. Not to compliment a commission or a piece of posted artwork? Not to tell JB what his work meant to you?

Sounds like a real fan to me. How have you added anything here, other than to stir up a bunch of shit?

What if we ask you the same question, William?

I can understand the "old stuff was better" opinion when an artist's style changes.  When Jim Lee got into his Frank Miller phase, it didn't work for me.  Actually, I guess I can add ANY of the artists who fell into a Frank Miller phase (cough*Art Adams*cough).  And I really enjoyed early Brian Hitch when he was more of an Alan Davis clone than the photrealism style he uses today.  The older stuff was more dynamic for me.  Contrasted with Alan Davis who simply got better and better.  So maybe that's all the issue is... an artist changes their style and loses some fans while maybe gaining others.

To this extent I find myself somewhat jealous of artists I perceive as more or less stagnant. They "locked" into a style early on, and stuck with it. Their fans never have to deal with change. My fans have to deal with it constantly. As an artist, I fear stagnation far more than I fear losing readers!

Maybe the only reason why people think the older stuff is better is because they've stopped liking what the artist does. If thats the case it isn't the artists fault the people should just move on and leave it at that. Instead of saying His older stuff was better just say I don't like his stuff anymore. and find something you do like.

this is a perfect post... for Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon message board...
although there it would be more difficult to try to get under JB's skin,
wouldn't it...

titling the post 'your older stuff was better"... can you ever just move
along Erik. Many of us like this board and interacting with JB... I'd hate
for him to abandon it because of some stupid gameplaying...

I posted it on my board at the same time--and I said at the beginning of
my rant that it wasn't aimed at any particular artist. That you assume that
I'm taking about anybody says more about you than it does me.

I know there are people here that absolutely refuse to believe it--but I
didn't come here for an argument. I signed up for this forum because
there are interesting conversations about comic books by people with a
genuine love for comic books (and that is, sadly, very lacking in most
comic book forums where the goal seems to be [i"who can shit on this project the fastest?) and because I'm a fan of John Byrne's work.

Whatever Erik, well played...

your message board is as guilty of the "shit on other projects" the quickest... you take it another step and shit on other creators...

should I cut and paste your comments about Byrne's Star Trek work ("I don't give a SHIT about anything he does anymore?")

Sounds like a lot of shitting on comics there, pal.... you can come here, hat in hand, and play the plaintive good guy.... you may even fool a bunch of people who will accuse me of being the "shit stirrer" but you will never fool me...

so you post here to be the nice guy because of the mudslinging that goes on at other boards, including your own?

But in YOUR OWN WORDS posting here is "hardly worth it" since JB is so biased, ridiculous and flawed in his thinking!!!

you are a gem Larsen

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is why you fall for things that Larsen says... no ability to think outside the box.... believe everything you are told, take everything at face value....

maybe, just maybe, I have posted here before... get a clue dude.

I will back off this thread unless Larsen comes back with some poorly thought out "excuse" for posting here.

EL On JBF: this is a great site, with comic loving fans... no BS

EL on Erik's board: posting on JB is pointless, JB is flawed, deletes posts, etc... horrible experience....

So which is it Larsen?

Erik - I actually gave you the benefit of the doubt that you came here as a fan of JB's work.  But after reading your comments in that thread about JB own your own forum, I find it harder to believe.

When did this become the "Scott O'Malley" forum?
