Thanks for posting that Trevor Von Eeden interview excerpt, Dave. I always wondered what was going on between him and DC back then. It didn't make any sense that they had such a good artist working for them and didn't put him anything major. The pulling the chair gag on him just shows how pathetic comic editors were and still are today.

To get into the more constructive area, referring to Erik's pruposal once, I would as a reader like to see JB on whatever company, also his company. But the way I see it Erik  is sitting on more than one chair. You can't market green manalishi or whteever it's called and then distribute other comics, since it's equivalent to saying Buy this comic and then putting a huge paranthesis around it. And what we have seen here, proves my point, an advertising campaign by Erik is advertising constructed in a way nobody wants his work to be advertised. So why even ask?

In all honesty, Erik isn't a doubletalker.

There were two different points being made.
Marvel cancelling Hidden years was.. "(But that was) a tactical error." according to Erik.
It's like saying Bone has been going on for too long to grab any headlines, it's not like saying  it's not a work of pure genius..which it is.

Eriks view of JB is that he's not playing the media game, not being an attention whore, and he's paying the price for that.

Life leaves no good deed unpunished..

I'm not entirely sure that they didn't put Von Eeden on anything 'major' -
I recall his GA mini got a pretty big in-house ad boost, and GA is
definitely in the top-ten of DC's pantheon. And 'Thriller' got a big boost,
especially when you consider that the writer was an unknown. Not that I
don't doubt that DC management tried to 'put him in his place,' but it
also sounds (just from this one excerpt) like Von Eeden was a pissed-off
guy in general - calling the interviewer 'arrogant, inconsiderate and
condescending' for asking him if he saw 'Thriller' as a vehicle for
experimentation, which strikes me as kind of an extreme response, in
context.

This is why I generally should know better than to read interviews or
otherwise too much of the personalities of artists I like - even though
there are often valuable nuggets about their process, sometimes you just
come away feeling lousy.

All of that having been said, I, too always wondered where this amazing
artist got to, and why I never saw much more of his work after that.

Thanks - I'd seen that site before, but hadn't really perused it. Again, in
reference to him being offered anything 'major' - and I quote, here:

Around this time Frank Miller made contact with Trevor and offered him
the art chores for the forthcoming Batman: Year One. "...Frank had called
me in person to offer me the Batman: Year One job, before giving it to
Mazzuchelli... I said, 'No.' And I have no regrets"

Call me crazy, but I don't think it gets any more major than HAVING FRANK
MILLER ASK YOU TO DRAW BATMAN: YEAR ONE.

I think that the question (why your old stuff was better) is at that time you did the work it was the best you maybe could do at the time and you get better or worse depending on your frame of mind and whats going on around you at that time!

A wise man once said:

"The old stuff was better" should almost always be read as "I have nostalgic
fondness for the old stuff, which is what I first encountered as a kid, so is
what made the greatest impression on me."

The one who made a great impression on me in the comic strip world was and still is to this day Frank Bellamy! The other most important person in all the world was my mother and my dog Billy they were the biggest influence on my art too!

This may call for one of JB's patented "purposefully obtuse" comments...

••

How's this:

I have so little influence, Larsen scripted over blank pages in FREAK FORCE.
