Didn't Quitely change his name so his family wouldn't know he was working in comicbooks?  Pretty sure I read that somewhere. If accurate, that about says it all.

Joe-  You are correct he did do that very early on.  He was afraid on how his mom and dad would react to him working on comics.  Heck, when I was younger my parents were happy if I had ANY job!

"Ah yes grandeur what is grandeur? "

**********

According to dictionary.com: "the quality or state of being impressive or awesome; the quality or state of being lofty or elevated in conception or treatment; the quality or state of being exalted in some deliberate way"

I don't think that Quitely WonderWoman picture is bad as such -- I like the shield very much, and the sword and parts of the costume are well drawn. But it does lack the heroic grandeur we might expect. She looks too waifish.

He does seem to draw faces a little oddly at times. As if they're chewing on a nettle or something. The freeze-frame thing isn't to my tastes either, although occassionally it is possible to pull this off and still imbue the picture with dynamic qualities (I think the splash/cover of Batman and Robin diving out of the sky in front of the Bat symbol works quite well, for example), but far too often this style does just result in things looking static. As JB pointed out, you have to work to add life and movement to sequential, static images. Jack Kirby virtually wrote his own visual language for doing this kind of thing and it's a little sad to see so few taking advantage of this heritage.

Examples of 'freeze-frame' art (as opposed to using motion lines) that still manage to convey all sorts of power and movement (both by Frank Miller)

 QUOTE:
A drawing of Spider-Man carrying groceries can be MUCH more interesting than that sleepy little sketch.

One wonders why Spider-Man would be walking while carrying groceries at all (and whistling?).  The guy's kind of an outcast; I don't think he would ever be blithely strolling along the street.

-----------

What does that say? From what I've read Quitely adopted the pseudonym
while he was working on an underground satire comic because he was afraid
his parents mind find the material upsetting.

••

If true, would not a move to mainsrteam comics be a cue to switch to his real name?

I contemplated a nom de plume very briefly, in my pre-pro days. But it was "Jon Burn", which I thought I might use because so many people have trouble pronouncing my last name.

You'd have to ask Quitely about that as that information wasn't in the
interview I read.

I'd like to see Frank Quitely draw a comic with warriors and ogres and mages
and goblins.

------------------------------------------------

How about He-Man?

Edited to remove my poorly aligned scan, thanks Paulo.
